There’s no doubt that Baaeed is a terrific horse. After today’s romp in the Juddmonte International, he is, in my opinion, wavering near the edge of potential greatness…

However, with just one more run in him (the Champion Stakes being the primary target) before being bungled off to stud, I feel that should he win it, the ‘greatness’ title still won’t be reached.

So, if I owned Baaeed or a horse of matching status, I’d aim him at the Arc. Whether he’d win it or not, I’d still keep him in training for next season. Only then would I feel that greatness is there to be achieved.

I want to see what a first-class horse does on the track, not in a bonking box.

I wouldn’t even run him again – just to annoy the OP.

Agree. The Arc is the premier race in Europe. It is a shame Frankel did not run in it. Likewise it will be disappointing if Baaeed does not go to Longchamp (and Haggas appears to have ruled it out).

Frankel was campaigned safely and the same arguably applies to Baaeed, especially this season.

Why not run in the Arc? Would it really affect his stud value if he did not win? He has the all important Group 1 wins at a mile and ten furlongs that get breeders excited.

Not just Haggas but the owner as well as ruled out the Arc.

You’re all forgetting the key factor here.

Ascot is half an hour from me.

    Longchamp isn’t.

It’s in France – a country which would be perfect, but for the French.

And on Arc Day it’s full of Brits – which is even worse.

I don’t often disagree with Haggas on where he runs his horses and I don’t here. It’s a no brainer to go for the Champion, that’s what I would do if I owned him. I think it’s a whole lot easier if you have no interest in the horse to say go for The Arc but if you got beaten in that race, you would be absolutely gutted and never get over what a mug you’ve been.
Purely as a racing fan though I would prefer they ran in The Arc

Agree it is a no brainer but it is the safe option. He will win at something like 1-10 and we will have learned nothing about him.

It makes perfect sense to connections but it is boring from a racing fans perspective.

Disappointing he isn’t being aimed at the Arc; it really is the biggest flat race of the year. I presume they want to preserve his unbeaten record. Again, the stud value tail wags the racing dog.

If I owned the horse who really is on the cusp of greatness, it would be Newcastle in November, Kempton on Boxing Day, Sandown in February and Cheltenham in March. ;-)

Greatness is not measured by the races won but by the quality of the performances.

How so many people fail to grasp this simple point astounds me.

Greatness can actually be measured by anything the individual likes, Gladders.

The world is not beholden to our criteria.

I personally think it’s who you beat and by how far and, to a lesser extent, how often.

Whether I had a right good bet on it or not remains an underrated consideration too, I feel.

I was just about to type it’s the quality of the opposition that counts most but you beat me to it Ian.

I don’t care which race Baeed runs in as long it’s the toughest race available. I’d rather see the best horses battling out a thrilling finish than one romping home by five lengths.

What made Frankel great was the fact that the horses he was laying waste to were, themselves, mopping up group races thereafter. Frankel’s form lines are amongst the strongest I’ve ever witnessed.

You’d think Frankel would have broke them Ghost.
I think Sea The Stars was great, he didn’t win by as far as Frankel but his stride was shorter and he did it over a variety of distances and all as a 3 y/o in 3 different country’s. Has any horse done what he did in one season. He’d have won another 5 or 6 group 1’s as a 4 y/o perhaps.?

I’d be all over the Arc if I owned Baaeed.
Its the difference between “well done” and “Oh my ******* Lord”

I think the Champion Stakes (British) is the wrong race. It would be more interesting to take him over to Leopardstown for the Irish equivalent and then to have the options

    Ascot
    Breeders Cup
Keeping him in training for the 2023 season

Sheikha Hissa seems to know pretty much about racing and also to trust William Haggas. If she feels her father wanted him to continue racing at five, then she’ll keep him in training. Sending him to stud after his next race is not a done deal, imo.

No way on Earth will Baaeed stay in training at five.

At the end of the day, money talks and in the same way Frankel won the Champion Stakes before going to stud at £125,000 x 120 mares a season, Baaeed will be on stallion duty in 2023 also.

Do the maths – fillies, mares and stayers with limited breeding revenue potential stay in training, but not the miler/middle-distance likes of Baaeed.

You could be right, Ian. But what else is around?
The Irish have almost nothing at 10f that could match strides with him. Homeless Songs has top entries at 1m, Magical Lagoon is a 1m4f horse and Aiden has nothing to compete with him.
What’s left elsewhere? Mishriff??? No way Haggas would teach Sheikha to leave out such an opportunity….
