Question: should the St Leger still be known as a classic or should it now be something like the Arc?

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

Not sure how that would work as the Arc is in France.

The Classics were originally stepping stones to the Gold Cup at four and beyond and, back in the 18th-19th centuries, in some ways the St Leger was arguably the most relevant, being the longest.

But times change and 1m2f, not 2m4f, is the key global distance nowadays.

But all the time the St Leger is still competitive I would leave it alone, even if it is principally a source of NH stallions nowadays.

17 It’s 1984 and I’ve left uni now and moved to London and am working for Raceform, going racing whenever I get the chance. I get a train to Chichester, a bus to the course then see Commanche Run win which race at Goodwood en route to St Leger glory?

18 Prior to that it’s Paddington to Newbury on the train to see the Geoffrey Freer Stakes. Who won it?

19 I’m kindly given a lift by a then Raceform colleague to Windsor one Monday evening. He went on to work for TODAY and the Racing Post before launching his own private tipping service. What was his name?

    20. My summer job at Raceform is coming to an end but I am staying in London because I’ve been lucky enough to be offered a job on a weekly racing paper with a distinctive shape and green masthead. I think it still exists today. Can anyone name it? Clue: It doesn’t just cover racing.

    21. Into November and a great weight-carrying win in the Hennessy from a possibly under-rated Cheltenham Gold Cup winner: who?

    22. 1985 and two horses from the same ownership and yard fight out the Stayers’ Hurdle. The runner up looks a bit unlucky and in different ownership more effort might have been made to get the result reversed. His name?

    23. A horse I had once seen run in a 3yo Handicap at Beverley wins the Champion Chase – who?

    24. Who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup that year?

    21 Burrough Hill Lad

22 I Should know this – Keep thinking Crimson King but that’s a current horse. Crimson ???

23 Must be Badsworth Boy but never knew about Beverley

    24 Forgive N Forget

    20. I would like to say The Irish Field but why would that be printed in London. Maybe just “The Field”.

    Nothing that posh!

It was a weekly tipping paper, really – but not just racing, that’s the clue to the title!

17 and 18 are the March Stakes and Baynoun, who went on to finish second to Commanche Run at Doncaster. (Interestingly, my autocorrect wants to have Comanche with just one m)

The paper may be the Racing And Football Outlook, or RFO as it was affectionately known: Really F***ing Odious

    @homersimpson
got the rest of the racing ones; the hurdler was Crimson Embers, who should have been awarded the race on the disqualification of Rose Ravine.

On a separate note, Badsworth Boy’s 1985 Champion Chase victory was his third in succession; his first win remains the benchmark by which all other two mile chasers should be judged. Even Sprinter Sacre didn’t do anything quite like that, in my opinion.

Gladiateur correct on all fronts, though I had a lot of affection for the RFO.

Badsworth Boy, a miler on the Flat and a beaten favourite in a Triumph Hurdle, really hurdled his fences, low, fast and economical.

He never was awarded the monster ratings of Sprinter Sacre, but he certainly dominated in his day.

Got my own memories attached to Forgive N Forget Gold Cup winning year, as I thought it was a conundrum but I studied and restudied timeform racecards for the meeting. Not the figures but the commentary and my decision was a slender vote for the winner, but thought that it won’t win a second one. :mail:

When I went to my first Derby (1985) I slept outside under an awning at Epsom College of Art. Unplanned and uncomfortable.

That (1985) also was the first Derby I went to.

I may have a question about it in due course.

Yes I had to google this in the end as it was doing my noggin in.
