Everyone has their own idea of Racing Heaven/Hell and I’d guess we could all find people who would gladly propose individual tracks as their idea of Heaven/Hell.
November 20, 2007 at 17:24 #125923My Dad and I have been to Wolverhampton four or five times this year and might fit an evening meeting in before the end of the year. Low grade races I know but you can get a pint when you want one, no queueing for the loos and generally you can get a seat in the bar as well and more to the point I seem to be quite successful on the punting front ! I do prefer the jumps though and I went to Cheltenham on Sunday, the first non festival day I’ve been to , and despite the weather probably enjoyed the experience more than when we go on World Hurdle day in March. Being able to get a drink quickly and not queueing too long for the tote was a new experience for me at Cheltenham (well in the last ten years anyway). If it wasn’t for the top quality races at the festival it would be touch and go whether we bother as it aint what it used to be 20 years ago when I started going to Cheltenham. As mentioned already the crowds are a pain (which is why we go on the Thursday) and I’m sure some of the people there disappear in to one of the tents and never see a horse all day ! So back to Wolverhampton, although it is only poor quality races they tend to be reasonably competitive, you can get a drink, plenty of space in the stands and you can always watch the better class racing in the bar. Give it a try I say, though not too many of you as I don’t want you TRFers hogging the bar.
November 20, 2007 at 19:48 #125946We live in Leicester which is just about pootling distance, but I’ve yet to persuade the rest of the family that Wolverhampton would set their Saturday evening alight. I shall keep trying.
I have to admit that having visited Cheltenham for the festival and Leicester for a Monday afternoon run-of-the-mill jumps meeting, I’d prefer Leicester any day. You can breathe and move! Luxuries missing from Cheltenham.
Plus it’s great seeing these ordinary horses winning ordinary races for their ordinary owners. Just as much fun as the big events.November 20, 2007 at 20:30 #125954Burroughill
I live about 7 miles from Loughborough and it doesn’t take too long to get to Wolverhampton down the M42,A5,M54 route although they do like their roadworks in Wolverhampton sometimes. Leicester on a Monday is positively crowded compared to Wolverhampton. Unfortunately not attended Leicester this year, usually go early December but unless I throw a sickie wont manage that either.
November 20, 2007 at 21:54 #125976have been going to the cheltenham november meeting for about ten years now, really enjoy the friday and sunday but saturday is quite uncomfortable (mainly due to the big crowd) and would gladly swap it for a quiet meeting at uttox or bangor. Also, the hoteliers of cheltenham are starting to take the p@#s a little bit with their prices – its starting to get expensive to stay down there for the weekend.

No I’ve not managed to get to Leicester yet this year, I work full time so it’s not easy for me either.

A Friday night at Kranji when it’s nine races on the fibresand, 33oc, 100% humidity and there are all these humongous giant black moths flying in and out of your ears
November 21, 2007 at 10:06 #126034Blimey KT, how big are your ears ?
November 21, 2007 at 10:14 #126038Hey yeah…. they must be huge, I haven’t checked lately!
November 21, 2007 at 11:22 #126050i guess pengamon is right, we’ve all got our favourites
it must have been a bad day on my only trip to wolves as i have said since that if my friend was to offer me a door-to-door lift again and on top, stop off at any pubs i wanted there and back, buy all my drinks and food, give me a grand for punting and provide me with a pro for the day, i still wouldn’t go back
it was hell, it was cold, all the facilities except the bar were closed which either had inpentrable queues or their tills weren’t working so we couldn’t even get a cup of tea in the 4 hrs we were there – and we tried a few times – no food, no drinks, no winners – a thoroughly miserable cold evening with a 4hr traffic-jammed drive either side of it
never again, ever
