November 20, 2007 at 08:52 #125823i’d suggest you move to Dubai and watch camel racing for the rest of your days.
November 20, 2007 at 08:56 #125824If this question appears on Fighting Talk this weekend, at least we’ll know who sent it in…

I suppose a repeat visit ought to be factored in at some point, seeing as how I’ve not been back since 1983, but I continue to struggle to muster up the requisite enthusiasm. Your mission, Nick, should you choose to accept it, is to win me over!
(NB I’ve already seen this year’s calendar, so don’t try to dupe me into thinking they’re point-to-pointing there again…

November 20, 2007 at 09:19 #125830My parents used to hold their annual dog show at the old Dunstall Park, I can still remember running around the old brick buildings, crumbly as they were.
But though the quality of racing is ordinary, I have always enjoyed visiting what is my local track and can certainly recommend a visit. A cold Monday afternoon in late November/early December is just the ticket. Though I tend to close my eyes as I drive in the general vicinity of the Molineaux, but that is very much a personal preference.
November 20, 2007 at 09:25 #125832WW, did you by chance meet up with a lovely young lady and immediately fall in love with her??
Must have been summat like that, shirley?

November 20, 2007 at 09:31 #125836No – I think it was something to do the peace and tranquility of the place. I don’t do crowds as I am getting older. I really want to go to Southwell when it re-opens.
November 20, 2007 at 09:33 #125839The biggest redeeming feature of Wolverhampton is what is now called the Horizons Restaurant (used to be the Zongalero). The best way to watch racing on a cold, wet Saturday evening in Wolverhampton, especially when there is a group of you.
The meetings that really annoy me are the "split" ones they sometimes have, where they have four races starting aroung 4:00 then an hour and a half gap before racing again at 7:00. That hour and a half is a bugger to fill as, not surprisingly, all the restaurants suddenly become very busy.

November 20, 2007 at 10:05 #125846Haven’t been to every race course but been to most.NH.
I can undestand anyone not enjoying Cheltenham especially at the Festival. Unless you know your way around and have got a decent badge it can be hell. Cheltenham is not my type of place at all and I could go virtually anywhere on the course.
My favourit courses sre Sandown and little old Perth (never had to ay to get in
) Perth is a fantastic little course and the Jocks also love riding there …….more than few who rode there for the first time would talk of how they could see the salmon leaping when they were down the far side. I spent a lot of time watching the race from the last fence where you could hear the jocking yelling their heads off at the horses…….it’s something everyone should do at least once (Not the same as the TV)Eveyone seems to know everyone at Perth and Trainers Jocks and punters are all like one big group. They say racing is a great leveller and Perth is a classic example of it and everyone should try and get there. You’s love it. That’s real racing.
November 20, 2007 at 10:47 #125855You’ll find no quarrel from me on the above, FoF – Perth’s wonderful.

November 20, 2007 at 16:02 #125890I am a jumping fan through & through, being members at Bangor we get a ‘freebie’ at Wolverhampton. Years ago it used to be for a jumps meeting, but alas no more and yet I like Wolverhampton.
It’s the sort of flat racing I like, no superstars, just bread & butter horses trying to earn a crust for their owners, and the course itself is friendly, unhurried, everything easily accessible, about 10 steps from the stand to the winners enclosure, about half a dozen bookmakers, lovely cup of coffee, food ain’t bad & they seem to get coachloads of elderly & disabled people who are made very welcome & don’t have to put up with being jostled etc, all in all if it held jumps meetings I’d be a regular, there’s just something about it, I just wish they’d clap more when the winners come in, try as we might 2 of us can’t generate rapturous applause.November 20, 2007 at 16:07 #125894
quixallcrossett…can anyone comment on the standard of service at the racecourse hotel? I’ve forgotten it’s name [Hol. Inn?], only I’ve heard quite differing reports from extraordinarily good to dire, only I might go there one day.

November 20, 2007 at 16:16 #125896Sorry can’t help, we have a motor home & usually stay at Newport in Shropshire when we go there. I know Derek Thompson stays there, but whether or not that’s a recommendation I’ll leave you to decide!!
