I don’t think any trains are running, unless there are any special trains? I live in Manchester but will be in London over Christmas and have bought raceday tickets just now and then I’ve just realized that the normal trains aren’t running, can anyone advise?
Regards,
Chris.
December 18, 2007 at 23:47 #131139According to national rail there is a half hour train service from Waterloo on Boxing Day.

If not, might try a coach from Victoria Coach station, else taxi.

December 19, 2007 at 00:06 #131143it aint gonna be easy, depends i spose from where you are starting in london …. ?
try the following links tho :

and

cabs will be double fare minimum so it really does depend from where the journey is starting from as to how feasible it might be to get there on bday
December 19, 2007 at 00:11 #131146Starting from Palmers Green north London but prepared to get the tube to closest point, will check those links, thank you.
December 19, 2007 at 00:20 #131148It appears there is a bus from Hatton Cross and Richmond tube stations according to your first link Simon so just got to hope and check that the tube can get us there!

Taxi? I’d rather walk and stick my cash on Kauto
December 19, 2007 at 08:59 #131168Regular bus service from outside Richmond tube station if you can get there. That’s how I attended 12 months ago.
December 19, 2007 at 09:01 #131169Apologies for sounding negative Chris, but I’d worry more about getting back after racing, when the public transport options are likely to be even more limited.
And if I was going to Kempton, I wouldn’t start from Palmers Green! I was born in the next suburb across and Palmers Green was even hard to get to from there by bus.

Staying with my uncle though who lives in Palmers Green, I’ve just spoken to the transport for London helpdesk and the Piccadilly line is running all day from around 830am to 1130pm and that takes me from Bounds or Wood Green, which are the closest tube stops to Palmers Green, to Hatton Cross with no changes, then there is the bus service from there, last bus back is 1650 and last race is 1545 so fits in nicely.
My brother isn’t keen on going though and I don’t want to go alone so will tell him that the tube takes 20 minutes (it takes an hour but think he’d say no if I told him that )
So it is possible for anyone else thinking of going by public transport in the central London area
Thanks for all your help guys, especially Simon.
December 19, 2007 at 09:41 #131174On Boxing Day there are not normally any trains from Waterloo to Kempton Park or Sunbury. The London Underground & Buses do run a pretty good service though.
In the past I’ve gone on the Piccadilly line to either Hatton Cross or Hounslow East, walk to Hounslow bus station & depending on time of day it’s a one or two short bus journeys from there. Never tried the Richmond route that Pru mentioned, but if it’s on the tube & buses it will be fine. You do need to allow time though, as the bus bit at the end can be slow. Give yourself two hours from central London to the racecourse.
Would also suggest you get an all-zone one-day travelcard or an Oyster card, as underground journeys & short hops on buses cost silly money if you try to pay for them with cash!
December 19, 2007 at 09:49 #131177on the subject of train travel, we always used to get a cheap day return from Derby to Cheltenham for the festival, then one year we couldn’t get one-it seems that because they know everyone’s going that week we all have to pay full fare – we could go by car but try to use public transport whenever possible..it makes me really angy…..
December 19, 2007 at 09:57 #131179The Richmond route would almost certainly be quicker given its straight down the A316. Can be a bit of a crawl through loads of traffic lights from Hounslow east to Sunbury
December 19, 2007 at 10:24 #131186I think I’d change at Earls Court for Richmond as well (assuming District Line running). That Piccadilly line to Heathrow always reminds me of Woody Allen’s line
"Eternity lasts a very long time. Particularly towards the end."
Good luck.
December 19, 2007 at 10:37 #131187Ha, thanks guys, I was thinking that, wasn’t sure if it was worth hopping off the Pic line to change and getting to Richmond rather than Hatton Cross, but sounds like it will be quicker, will do that then!
December 19, 2007 at 13:11 #131199The district line is the one to Richmond in case nobody has mentioned it
December 19, 2007 at 19:37 #131248I once hired a car to drive from the Midlands to Kempton Park on Boxing Day – only cost £26. Unfortunately, I had to pay £250 excess as some cockney fcuker reversed into me and drove off!
