I think we, certainly I, have a lot of emotional investment in the animals. See them in the parade ring, maybe get to know their "personality" or running style, maybe bet on them so for a few minutes it is "my horse". Then it is horrible seeing them come to grief. So I think it is natural to be upset.
Princess Diana, Peaches etc. never knew, never cared about so to me it would be strange to feel upset about their death. Shame about it but no grief or upset from me really and can’t understand why a million strangers grieve.

We used to keep Greyhounds as well and I remember one of them getting put down as he simply went from being an effective hare chasing machine to a big friendly galoot. He would walk up beside anyone and sticks his head out looking for a caress. That was tougher than most but I never really questioned it because first and foremost, it was business.
When a horse falls, i take a certain comfort in seeing a spasm in that its usually a sign of instant death (or so im led to believe). After that my first thoughts are usually with the head girl/lad who look after them. I move on pretty quick though.
