I bet On His Own for a right few quid at 1000’s for The 2013 Gold Cup……but they didn’t consider it for him.
I still reckoned he was a Gold Cup horse rather than a National horse, and I added him to the market on Betfair myself last season. Bet him again at 1000’s, not for as much as the season before……..but was agonizing to see him just pipped by the horse I backed on the day, didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Laid him for a few quid in the photo finish, even though I thought it looked a certainty he’d be awrded the race, so made a right good profit, but I’d have loved to have been able to say I added The Gold Cup winner to the Gold Cup Market myself and bet him at 1000’s

As the list shows, any number of horses were better than Dawn Run over hurdles and her rateable form over fences wasn’t that high either.
She was a likeable mare, but she wasn’t one of the greats – even though she was talked about as if she was.

Dawn Run had one year at Champion Hurdling, and one year for a crack at the Gold cup; if she’d spent longer at either she’d have reached a higher rating. But a lower rating is the price you pay for achieving the impossible. Mind you the day won at Aintree I think she was unbeatable, even Istabraq could not have followed that gallop
I agree that Dawn Run would have gone on to improve her ratings if her life and career had not been so tragically cut short.
However Night Nurse was the greatest hurdler ever and was around at the same time as a host of great horses such as Monksfield, Birds Nest, Dramatist, Sea Pigeon et al.
He also had a pretty fearsome array of chasers around at the same time such as Silver Buck, Gay Spartan etc.
It just goes to show the dangers that the game can unfortunately throw up though because not only did Dawn Run pass away too soon, but 2 potential greats around the time of Night Nurse also sadly went too soon in Gay Spartan and Golden Cygnet.January 22, 2015 at 20:44 #502481Great post, Coggy – well said.

Beating Wayward Lad, and previous winner Forgive’n’Forget bears comparison with Silver Buck and Gay Spartan, and she also beat the reigning 2-mile champion over his favoured distance; all this as a virtual novice, remember
January 22, 2015 at 21:32 #502486Sorry.
Short enough for you?
Value Is EverythingJanuary 23, 2015 at 08:17 #502502Steve suggests he doesn’t want a ‘Dissection of a dissection’ Ginge……..So what do yo do? I’m getting repetitive strain injury scrolling through your repetitive waffle!
January 23, 2015 at 13:09 #502515I have to agree with you Gord….I end up bypassing the thread…..and this thread is one of the more interesting ones.
I don’t mind a bit of debate but there are ways and means of getting views across in a manner that doesn’t create hostility.
Sorry GT!!
January 23, 2015 at 13:16 #502517Personally love to take on all of these super-hyped horses from the Richard Hannon yard – often to my own financial detriment. Canford Cliffs, Toronado, Olympic Glory and most recently Tiggy Wiggy and Ivawood.

Sorry boys, It’s my fault for bringing that up but I suppose it helps explain why the horse was the one I wanted to see beaten. Just ignore this part of the thread.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 23, 2015 at 16:41 #502542All too late in life I have realised the following….
If you can’t get your point across in under 100 words you can’t write, you can only ramble.
If you think anyone wants to read more than 100 words you’ve written you’re deluded.
Less is more.

OK.
Outstrip, donkey, finished behind ten horses rated lower, one 17lbs lower, at Meydan on 8th Jan when 3/1 fav. Beaten 21 lengths. Donkey I tell you.
Well under 100 words.
ps is OK one word or two?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Depends on the point, surely.
Mind, it is possible to condense a point to still fewer. Five words basically covers the Bible (he dies in the end)…

No worries….I’ll get my thinking cap on and do some proper contributing to an interesting thread!!!

Aye, very good gc……..
and here’s me currently halfway through it
, have you never heard of a spoiler alert
Someone once told me you could condense the Bible to two words and perhaps even one, depending on whether
codswallop
is one word or two.
