This angle might help me out in the future when compiling a race.

There are horses that spring to mind off the top of my head, The likes of Tryster and Chookie Royale.

Now what are the main reasons?
can anybody else name a few horses? Wether they have the same action or not I’m not sure.

I’d imagine the reasons are individual to each horse and probably myriad.

    A few horses for you…

Tarooq, 13 wins on aw, 0-21 on turf
Bertie Blu Boy, 12 wins on aw, 0-12 on turf
Colourbearer, 9 wins on aw, 0-23 on turf
Arctic Lynx, 8 wins on aw, 0-21 on turf

Honey of a Kitten, Multitask, Greyfriarschorista, Sewn Up, Storm Runner, Archie Rice, would be amongst a list of horses that have scored multiple all weather victories, that had at least ten runs on turf, and never won on that surface.

A history of American breeding may be a key factor.

Tryster sired by Shamardal (USA) and the dam Min Alhawa (USA)

Toast Of New York is a big name that comes to mind. Has only raced twice on turf but clearly is a better horse on a dirt/synthetic surface.

    Suluk. Enough said.

While Suluk won 18 AW races over hurdles (all of them at Southwell between 1990 & 1993) he also won 6 on turf.

Tempering won 22 AW races (all of them at Southwell between 1990 & 1996). I can’t locate his turf record.

Anyone could have written Temperings winning trip note/comments inrunning. All you had to do was type “led, soon clear” or just “made all”.
Fine beast on the Southwell dirt strip.

I’m sure there was another horse from that era that won about 1000 sand races. But it is lost for the moment.

China Castle’s record 25 wins on the AW was overhauled in March last year when Stand Guard won a match at Southwell. Stand Guard is 26 from 72 (AW) & 0 from 4 (Turf).

La Estrella joined Stand Guard on 26 wins when emerging victorious at Lingfield in January this year. La Estrella is 26 from 39 (AW) and 2 from 26 (Turf). The 12-y-o is entered up at Wolverhampton on Friday.

    Viltash,

Were you perhaps thinking of Rapporteur, who won 14 races on the AW, all at Lingfield between 1989 and 1994?

Just to offer one possible explanation of why some horses are so much happier on AW than turf, based on my ownership of a couple that fitted that profile. It’s that the artificial surfaces are much kinder to horses that suffer from painful joints, bruised feet, swollen ankles, that sort of thing. And a lot of horses do, as I learned frpm my years as an owner.

On turf, those sort of aches and pains deter a horse from stretching out when the ground is good or faster, but they are unsuited to softer ground as well. The AW surfaces don’t hurt them and enable them to show their full ability and they also give the horse confidence that racing doesn’t have to be associated with pain.

Strangely, Rapporteur also won 5 times on the Lingfield turf but never obliged anywhere else.

I wouldn’t argue that the AW & Turf courses at Lingfield are similar, so the horse was doubtless impressed with the scenery at the Surrey track.

    Ah No Submission and Rapporteur!!!
    Excellent chaps.

Rambo Waltzer just came to me as well, but looking at rp he grabbed 6 wins on the turf as well as 21 sand victories.
