A very sad day..I’m having mixed feelings of all the brave and beautiful horses that have won this week and those we shall never see again..

    I sympathise with him Gladders.
When you think of all the time and effort invested in that beautiful horse to bring him to Aintree and keep him stress free only to have all that ruined by brainless protestors who know nothing about horses and their welfare. They should be held responsible for causing the very thing they were protesting about.
    Complete lowlifes.

If he was “absolutely hyper” before the off to the point he needed washing off why wasn’t he scratched from the race?

Was a horrible fall, was instant from the clip I saw.

That’s what I was asking. Horses are assessed by the vets once again before the race. But it seems that they’re rather taken out of a race at smaller tracks. Can’t remember any horses to have been withdrawn in the Derby, the Gold Cup or the National in the past 30 years. Maybe someone can provide me with some information.

Hopefully all “hyper” horses will be looked at, before any kind of race.

I do think certain horses should have been withdrawn Prong. Galvin was getting very shaky and if Hill Sixteen was as bad as his trainer said then he too should have been taken out.
However, time was a factor and they skipped the parade. Maybe if they had paraded a vet might have spotted the horses that had become hyper and taken action. The horses were fast tracked to the start and then the stupid starter recalled them back after a false start adding more stress to the horses and jockeys. It was a total nightmare mainly caused by the protesters and they should be heavily fined for the disruption they caused which possibly contributed to the death of a much loved racehorse.

Police security should be so tight, that they’d never get anywhere near a racecourse.

Poor Hill Sixteen evidently suffered a heart attack.
I was at Aintree and did the course walk which I haven’t done for several years. It came as no surprise that the protestors targeted the area of the course they did. What surprised me was they were easily identifiable in their pink t-shirts so how did they get into the area … along the canal side path and get on to the course – surely that area should have been a no-go?? Given that we all knew they had plans how did anyone get to walk along there (even if they looked “normal” and hadn’t got a T shirt on at the time??)
Quite honestly there could have been more tragic losses of horses – eg those loose horses were seemingly everywhere with 7 loose after fences 1 and 2 … and the two that turned violently and then crashed through the barriers going on to gallop along the inside (remembering the course walk, which ended at fence 12 I realised that these horses came up to a solid barrier fence, way to high/strong to carry straight on and in fact one can be seen just regaining his feet there (I was quite surprised at this area as there seemed to be alot of stuff on the floor) and then it’s occupied by parked coaches). There were at least two who who clambered through a jump and of course the one that interfered with Lifetime Ambition – my heart was in my mouth seeing that …
The two horses taken to the vet hospital – Cape Gentleman was pulled up lame and Recite A Prayer was loose from very early on, I’ve not identified which loose horse he was yet – I hope their injuries respond well to treatment.
On reflection I do think the protestors actions delaying the start resulted in a rushed/chaotic start which in turn resulted in loose horses early on who were up with the field rather than following behind. Thankfully three of them did keep straight for several fences and jumped well (otherwise ??? could have happened) …
Lots for Aintree to reflect on …

Great post lochinver, I could feel myself getting stressed just reading it.
I would suspect the pink shirts went on as they reached their destination.
A lot of those loose horses seemed to have got themselves in a real state of stress and thank goodness with treatment, they will pull through.

As you say lots for Aintree to reflect on.
The idiot protestors should be hanging their heads in shame this morning because it was them and not the fences that caused this mayhem.

    RIP Hill Sixteen.

I did think the start seemed rushed and wonder – in hindsight – if there was a miscommunication of sorts between trainer and vets with each thinking the other had checked and cleared the horse to run, with them going straight back out as they did.

Regarding the loose horses, my heart was in my mouth watching them for most of the first circuit. It always brings to mind that in previous years horses have suffered fatal injuries while running loose after a fall and especially with the determination they showed to keep running no matter what was in their path. I am so relieved that the two other injuries we know about don’t seem life threatening.

Update on Cape Gentleman – I have seen info that he has severed a tendon and his owner is prepared to do all that can be to save him. This is a severe injury. Hoping all will be well …

I was horrified to see loose horses on the inside of the track: kept thinking of McKelvey. Hopefully they can us stem cells to treat Cape Gentleman?

    Such an upsetting weekend,
Thoughts with Cape Gentleman and wish him a full recovery. Sounds like he has a kind and caring owner. :rose:

Good news re Recite A Prayer … fractured an eye socket but will be fine. As I suspected he was one that crashed through the barriers and ran along the inside until having to put the brakes on near fence 12 and crashing into the fencing etc … there was quite alot of stuff there that could have caused damage to those loose horses …

Good news! Cape Gentleman has come through his operation well. Will be off to Ireland initially then to USA for his retirement.
