In the world of mathematics there are many unsolvable theorems, I would like to add one more to the list, Kirkland Tellwright and Haydock Park.
At Timeform there are many clever people, and it would be very interesting to know how they would go about solving yesterday’s speed figure nightmare.
Over the years I have rated thousand of meetings, and I can truthfully say yesterday’s meeting at Haydock Park was bordering in the realms as unsolvable.
You had 3 different disciplines, with 3 different going allowances, and also throw into the pot the 4.00 7f race was run over an extra 50yds.
What I won’t to know is? how come the BHA have not reeled in the clerk of the course, for years he has been taking the piss.
After about 2 hours I ended up with these figures.
Haydock

May 10, 2015 at 11:27 #965159I was also concerned in these days of dumbing down of racing how much the Swinton hurdle has lost its lustre. They should move the race to Easter or some other suitable time or course
May 10, 2015 at 19:09 #966493The Pertemps/ Swinton just mirrors continual decline. The inaugural running of this as the Royal Doulton (1978 ?) attracted champion hurdlers in just about the best quality handicap hurdle ever. I think Monksfield was just beaten into second trying to give 2 stone to a Fred Rimell trained winner. I think Haydock does better than it really deserves to these days
May 10, 2015 at 21:14 #966518Did Beacon Light win that one, receiving a stone from Monksfield? I do remember the prize-money was massive when it was first launched
May 11, 2015 at 05:58 #968917Now that I have settled down, I have come to accept that Haydock is a lost cause.
It’s not just me who thinks that way, when you realise that “Top Speed” hasn’t produced speed figures for the jumps at Haydock in ages.
At least he did have a go at the flat races, where he had two going allowances of -0.60s/f for the 6f race, and -1.00s/f for the 1m and 7f races, so on my reckoning, if he had attempted the jumps races he would have ended up with 4 going allowances on the day.
Food for thought…

May 11, 2015 at 07:24 #969481I wouldn;t trust the clerk of the course, Kirkland Tellwright, with a bargepole.
I well remember it was only a few years ago when he consistently used to say racing will go ahead (in wet conditions) only a day or two before a meeting only for the meeting to get abandoned despite the consitions not worsening any further,
I would never elieve the official description of the ground there (probably the same as at many tracks but especially so at Haydock).
May 11, 2015 at 09:31 #970465I mostly stopped betting at Haydock some time ago, a lost cause like you say BB.
How the man has remained in his job is beyond me.
May 11, 2015 at 15:55 #972433The issue with Haydock often has a lot to do with which tracks they are racing on and hence using correct standard times etc.
As the chase fences were wheeled onto the same ground the hurdles were on they clearly cant produce massively different going allowances and having walked it before racing there is now way after 16mm of overnight rain it was good to firm anywhere.
As lots of official distances are about to be adjusted for the remeasuring results it will be messy for a while sadly.

An example:
Newmarket 2nd may (good to firm)
Dave Edwards -0.27s/f (Gd-Sft)
TBB -0.25s/f (Gd-Sft)With my ability to correct and adjust using a going allowance figures, I posted on this forum the very next day, that the now infamous Wetherby national hunt race distances were incorrect, well before Timeform picked it up.
Haydock puts what happened at Wetherby into insignificance, Kirkland Tellwright shouldn’t be allowed to keep on changing what courses he uses, god forbid he might take a leaf out of Tramore (IRE) and change the race direction.

Hi Befair. I think Beacon Light may have won it the following season. The winner was Royal Gaye which was a bit disappointing given the stellar field
