Greatwood Handicap Hurdle
Totesport: 7-1 Medermit, 10 Harry Tricker, James De Vassy, Mamlook, Raise Your Heart, Ronaldo Des Mottes, 11 Starluck, 12 Cockney Trucker, Salute Him, Silverhand, 14 Nampour, Simarian, Squadron, 16 Red Moloney, 20 El Dancer, European Dream, Issaquah, Khyber Kim, McMurdo Sound, Mutual Friend, Tramp Stamp, 25-1 barNovember 9, 2009 at 19:16 #258050Despite top-weight, I’m inclined to follow Starluck until he’s beaten. I think there is a lot more to come from him, and a 147 rating won’t be enough to stop him. I can’t quite believe he wasn’t raised for his win at Cheltenham last month.
November 9, 2009 at 19:22 #258052Flemming is suggesting he won’t run because the weights have gone up.

If Starluck does line up then I won’t be opposing him, but with his participation seemingly unlikely I’m happy to side with Joanna Morgan’s
Raise Your Heart
. He’s run poorly at Cheltenham in the past, albeit when hampered in the County Hurdle, but his flat form has improved significantly this year and he could yet prove to be well handicapped.
James De Vassy looks like one to keep on the right side of throughout the season.

Starluck would be my choice but for the fact they have serious doubt about him getting the trip in a fast run race round there and that is why he’s 11/1 and not 4/1.
I can vaguely remember you suggesting in an old post that a certain horse would win the triumph and go on to win a champion hurdle. (forgive me if I am wrong ) Khyber Kim? It so happens I got told he’s fancied to win the Greatwood so I stuck a couple of hundred quid on him Ew at 20/1 just in case.
Of course these things very seldom turn out to be right but if he turns up that will be half the battle.
James Da Vassy does catch the eye as does Raise Your Hat but I’ll wait to hear what is actually likely to run before deciding what I think myself will win. It’s been known to cut up quite a bit in the past so patience is a virtue
November 11, 2009 at 00:15 #258186Looks like Starluck wont run but if he does I wouldn’t be rushing in to back him. A very classy horse but I think he would be first to give way in a battle. In a small field he would be very competitive but in a large field handicap I fear he may down tools when asked to put up a fight.

The going will be key to Raise Your Heart. The better the ground, the better he’ll go. I had him as one of my Cheltenham bankers last year……
He’s still very well treated in England compared to most Irish horses though and I wouldn’t put you off him.
November 11, 2009 at 00:34 #258189With the forecast rain I may have an ew on Cockney Trucker because of him being a soft ground horse.
November 12, 2009 at 14:01 #258346Pipe’s Greatwood Hurdle horse will be Ronaldo Des Mottes.
Did tell you – as low as 5/1 now

Smarty Pants!!! Won’t be in the first 4
Did you see Nigel T-D’s video? Very excited about Khyber King. Don’t say you weren’t told
Now 14/1 and no doubt will be shorter on the day
That’s 20 times da da da = ??? anyone got a calculator?
November 12, 2009 at 18:37 #258395I did suggest running Khyber Kim in the Champion when he was a novice hurdler because I don’t think he stands prolonged racing. Definitely looks the type best caught fresh and he and James de Vassy are the 2 I’d be looking at for the race at present.
November 12, 2009 at 21:59 #258426Does anyone know if Simarian is going or not ?
November 13, 2009 at 23:21 #258568A hard race to work out.
Think Ronaldo Des Mottes is decent horse who may have improvement on his rating but is too short now.
Khyber Kim is always dangerous as has serious ability on his day, as does European Dream, however both are hard to catch right.
Medermit is one who I think has serious ability and his chance will improve with the rainfall, however he is very high in the weights, but if it came up soft or worse he’d have to be a bet at 11-1.
Harry Tricker’s chance is washing away IMO and although he is well weighted I think others will move better in the ground.
Issaquah is well priced as think she is largely pretty honest, has conditions up her street and think she has improvement in her. At 20-1 she looks great value, and a definite e/w bet at this point regardless of how much more rain may fall.
Cockney Trucker would also have to come into play if there is much more rain and it were to come up soft or worse 16-1 may be a decent price for one so low in the weights if that were to be the case.
So, at the minute Issaquah e/w @ 20-1 is the only bet I’d care to play, however if it got much worse with rainfall I’d definitely play Medermit 11s and Cockney Trucker 16s.
November 15, 2009 at 03:27 #258701Staying up for Pacquiao / Cotto, so decided to have a look at this race…
Medermit’s second in the Supreme here in March reads particularly well and the ground will not pose a problem. A touch of class, but faces a difficult task giving weight to all but one and was well beaten on his reappearance last year.
Simarian is a very tough, very consistent young horse and boasts an 80% win / place record at Cheltenham. Won in very testing conditions at Stratford last year and recent efforts suggest he may want further. He will be staying on up the hill and could reach a place.
Respect should be given to any Charlie Swan horse that crosses the Irish Sea, and
Glenstal Abbey
is no exception. Consistent and open to improvement, he will also have the assistance of A P McCoy. Won at Clonmel over two and a half earlier this year in Heavy conditions, so will not be found wanting up the hill. A solid effort over two miles on his latest start, he travels well in his races and will be hard to keep out of the frame.

Really can’t understand the gamble on Harry Ticker. Barney Curley saw an oportunity to get some quick wins into Zabeel Palacewho Harry Ticker beat but they were moderate contests. Even at the weights I can’t see him being involved against this field.
If Khyber Kim is as well as they claim he must have a shout but I would never have picked him out myself. He may have improved but he was all the sage leading up to Cheltenham and never lived upto the hype. He wins, I’ll be over the moon but I’m not holding my breath.
A horse I do like the look of is Alan King’s Medermit. I’m not a big fan of Going Native but he was on one of his going days when Medermit ran him to a neck in the Supreme Novices.
He was then favourite for the Scottish Champion Hurdle asand beaten into 5th but the ground was pretty fast that day and Ayr wouldn’t be a stiff enough course for him to be sen at his best.
He’s got joint top weight and Alan King’s form is a bit in and out which is a worry but this is going to be a tough test today and if he is fit he’ll still be going when most have thrown in the towel.
Plenty others with chances but I’ll add Medermit ew at 14/1 to My Khyber King ew at 20/1, add a rfc (that would skin em!)and hope one of them wins.
November 15, 2009 at 10:25 #258725Going to stick with Cockney Trucker but will add Medermit
. Presuming that the going is still soft. [have added El Dancer to those two; couldn’t resist 25/1].
November 15, 2009 at 10:49 #258730Looks as if race could cut up today so will go with Nick Williams James De Vassy and top weight Raise your Heart.
