This is my kind of good old fashioned cavalry charge where just about everything has a chance when they are in the mood and betting is akin to the three cup shuffle trick, I clearly have a slate missing.
So I’m going to throw my hat in the ring and nominate one of my old favourites, before he starts drawing his pension. Borderlescott will eventually sit down in the stalls and say enough is enough, but at 11 years he shows no sign of that yet. His mark has come down to just 2lbs more than when he won last September at Beverley and although you have to go back to 2005 to find his one and only run at Ripon, he won that race so there should be no problem on that score.
Obviously there is the unknown factor, will the draw be in his favour. Not much you can do there if you are considering having an anti post punt, but at least as far as the ground conditions, he has won on ground ranging from soft to gf.
The 33-1 with Betvictor and Stan James is worth a punt, I doubt he will be that price come Saturday, although if you decide to wait I expect some bookies will be going 5 places.
The fact that he hasn’t run that well in the two races he has run in this year, doesn’t matter too much as these sprinters seem to step up now and again when it’s their turn. The good thing is that he wasn’t fading at the end, he was keeping on in both of the races.
Best of luck, and I would be interested to hear what others think of this equine lottery.
August 15, 2013 at 16:04 #448454Ok so we know the draw now, and Borderlescott is drawn 2. Now it’s not just a straightforward high or low is better at Ripon. The stats suggest that when the going is good or better ground, the advantage lies with the higher drawn horses. However, when the ground is soft, that advantage is reversed.

The present going is good, but the Ripon forecast is for heavy rain tonight and light rain from 11am onwards on Saturday. Hopefully it wasn’t a forecast by Michael Fish (nothing to see here, no hurricanes forecast…..move along please)so there is a likelyhood the ground will be on the soft side. Hopefully then, he is drawn well. The 33s has gone, but still some 25s about which I think looks decent value.
August 15, 2013 at 19:51 #448493I am a glutton for punishment with these suicide sprints but only for lowish stakes. Baccarat has been all the rage, in from an opening 8/1 to as low as 9/2. That is way too low for me and I’ll leave that to the lemmings and shorty backers. I mean, yes sir he can boogie
but
he needs a certain song (will mean nothing to younger readers)
I opted for Louis The Pious each-way, he was 12/1 yesterday and is still decent at 10/1 I think, but I wouldn’t take lower. He was third last year and has a decent level of win and place runs for the type of horse he is. He ran quite well (7th) in the Stewards Cup and is drawn in stall 4 which is close to others prominent in the betting Spinatrix (stall 1) and Pearl Ice (stall 3)
Should be the usual hard luck stories all round afterwards but happy punting!!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 15, 2013 at 21:13 #448504Good thread. If the ground remains Good or better I will back Summerinthecity. Good draw, top connections, and looked more than a little unlucky LTO against the progressive Tropics.

Hi PC, I agree with you, he was a little unlucky last time, the handicapper has noticed this too and has stuck on 5lbs for his efforts.
If you get the ground you want then I agree Summerinthecity is well drawn, I dont know if we have any punters from Ripon area that can give us a heads up here, but the forecast is for heavy rain tonight, in fact a yellow weather warning has been issued in north Yorkshire. If the heavens do open, then I think the drawn will favour those drawn low.Good luck either way.
August 17, 2013 at 11:02 #448619Yes there is that 5lb. I would imagine Captain Mainwaring was distinctly unimpressed with the assessment and wished he was a little more ‘unlucky’!
August 17, 2013 at 13:05 #448637I have to back the old boy but think its just sentimental. If the rain continues I’d be inclined to go for Confessional.
August 17, 2013 at 14:39 #448648Summerinthecity ran a decent race – not helped by the draw, I’ll back next time out too. Ayr Gold Cup?
