Is anyone else offended by the use of the names of great racehorses of the past being used in those ‘cartoon’ fake races in betting shops these days.
I only go into the bookies to read the Racing Post but I found myself twitching with annoyed incredulity as the commentary rang out featuring a stream of Group 1 winners and Champions of yesteryear.
It doesn’t seem right to me….Cynicism from the bookies who should show more respect if they care at all for the sport they make a lot of their living from…….and I can’t help thinking that the kind of people who bet on that trash hardly do so because they either know or care about the historic names that are being misused in this way.
June 13, 2013 at 22:37 #442703I always thought that owners’ colours were protected by copyright laws, yet the virtual races have loads of plagiarised silks. Paddy Power seem to be particularly bad in this respect; you’ll hear their in-house commentator mentioning owners by name as their virtual charge thunders to victory.

that is doubtful in GB, at least regarding non-grandfathered silks (ie those registered after current rules first took effect).
currently the BHA specifies permitted colours and permitted body, sleeve and cap designs:

even if this offers 12.6 million potential combinations, you’re arguably not creating anything original but just choosing from a pre-specified selection.
the more common route would be to seek trademark protection, but even there its not straightforward – look at what Juddmonte have done as regards Frankel: no sign of the familiar silks:

in Australia, it seems the regulator has recently snaffled even the right to do something like that:
June 14, 2013 at 20:27 #442762I have to say that when I’m trawling shops taking advantage of bets/offers I get refused online I sometimes hang around a minute just to see if Motivator will manage to get up to beat Montjeu, etc.

If you had hung around a little longer you would have seen Frankel in the mile and a half race. I thought he was going to win it at one stage but he got tired the last 150 yds. Ironically he was beaten by a horse called Stamina Dreamer.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
