Bet over the phone Steve, the price seldom changes unless you’re betting on an in play event ie. football match, cricket, golf etc. and most bookmakers are freephone these days anyway :)

That’s what Matt Chapman said, or something similar. He said because it was never mentioned that the ‘well backed’ 2nd fav wasn’t described as not coming out of the stalls, then anyone who was alert could have lumped on the fav as if the 2nd fav was still in the race.

    Steve,

    Ever been to Wolverhampton?

The 5F start is directly opposite the stands, so the stalls are at right angles to the commentary position and usually partly obscured by the cars and ambulance positioned on the inside of the track.

The commentator will normally watch 5F starts through his binoculars rather then on the TV monitor as the picture is head on which makes it very difficult to see what’s leading.

A mistake yes, but a very understandable one.

They dont really think of Commentators when buiding racecourses there was one the other day where the commentators view was obscured by a building and the presenter was asking him questions and he kept saying sorry theres a building in the way

On the subject of commentators, I enjoyed Graham Goode’s "senior moment" at Chester yesterday when he several times in commentary called John Terry "John Cherry". John Cherry was a wonderful staying handicapper who trotted up in the Chester Cup and Cesarewitch under Piggott in 1976.

Very true, Steve. I was told by an eminently reliable source recently that when the commentary box at Perth needed replacing, the commentators were given two choices for the new siting – either 1f from home, or the low-lying site at a terrible angle where it now resides. A bit like being asked whether you prefered death by hanging or electrocution, as he put it.

John Cherry – now there is name to bring back many happy memories.

Maybe Graham Goode was thinking of Trevor Cherry.

I think he was just "slushing" – G&T Graham?

The split screen is a huge irritation. Personally, I haven’t got the red button service but presumably many have so why not relegate the dirt racing – it is after all supposedly the NH season – and just show Fontwell and Gowran on the main screen?

I agree, i don’t care if they are off
at some 2nd rate course , i want to see the race that is running and was off first , i am too old as is my eyesight , to concentrate on 2 screens.

I’m not sure if ATR are tied into a contract to say that they have to show all races live (where possible), whether it be split screen or not – but surely it’s in the best interests of the in-running punters (and there are lots of them) that the races are shown live as they happen.

Imagine you are one of these in-running punters and you study hours before coming across a horse that you think has a great chance – but it’s running style suggests you might get bigger odds in running. You are next to your machine, waiting for ATR to show it live, and they suddenly go full screen to somewhere else and show ‘your’ race as a recording a few minutes later. How annoyed would you be? Especially when your selection bolts in but was being scrubbed along at the back half way through (just as you knew it would).

Using the example above, surely it’s better for everyone that we have a choice to watch the race live – whether it be full screen, behind a red button, in the top left of our sreen or in the bottom right of our screen.

I see where people are coming from regarding this being an issue – I’m just offering the other side of the coin as if I were an ‘in-running’ punter.

As you say some of us dont have the red button (if Sky could swallow their pride and give us Virgin customers access then the split screen would be unecessary). You will usually find ATR will go to commentary on a track that Arena do not own as they dont want to upset racecourses who might jump ship, So they have to show as much as they can if the was just ATR they could probably pick and choose but such is the rivalry between ATR and RUK they dont wanna risk losing any courses.

A few years ago when there were three uk meetings and two irish on a sunday they banished Wolverhampton and I think Worcester another week behind the red button. I was annoyed as I had no option wether I could watch them or not, I get sick of them ramming the red button down your throat and them saying SKY CHANNEL 415.

ATR unfortunately are bound by a ruling which states they must show 4 3 minutes advert breaks an hour during the day so they are also on a no winner when they have a lot of meetings to show.

It’s frustrating to have all the clashes and split screens when there’s a few meetings on but I’d far rather have it that way than when there’s only one meeting and you have to sit through half an hour of repeated filler between races.

Isn’t it just RUK who show repeats of earlier races to fill in time?

Yes it is a pain with the split screen but at least you get all the racing and for FREE.

It is just a shame that the camera shots from Ireland are so poor.

I think you will find that if a race is being shown by the BBC and also
by ATR [ for example from Ascot ] then ATR will be at least seven
    seconds behind the BBC.

For that reason ATR ‘ s feed is not really live and is a poor resource
    for an in-running punter .

I wasn’t aware of that Bimble, thanks for that. I don’t back in-running on horses so wouldn’t have realised this.

So in that case, forget my arguement above lol.

I believe that analogue signals dont have to go through as many places as digital. I think im right in saying the bbc and c4 signal go to the relevant transmitter and to the house aerial whereas cable and sky go from track to sky or virgin via satellite then back to the satellite then to the transmitters and to the boxes where they are deciphered and thats why they are behind.
Im not scientist (as you can tell) so anybody with the any knowledge in this field will surely correct me. All tv shows have a delay on virgina and sky comapred analogue tv.
