Seagull,<br>"Richard Hollies was it seems not watching the actual race but a monitor"<br> <br>Richard has commented about this on Betfair. He wasn’t looking at a monitor apparently. Anyway, it’s well worth a read.:)
October 19, 2006 at 10:25 #80495<br>Easy to lay blame, but have you ever been to Worcester?
When the current stand was built, the architect and builders decided that the stand should be constructed in line with the course, not at an angle as is normal practice. That means that the commentary and camera positions at the far end of the stand (to ensure they are close to the winning post), have a very restricted view of the near side of the run-in.
It is certainly difficult for the commentator to spot horses racing right up against the rail, as the fast finisher did, and the fact that the stand is also very close to the track makes it almost impossible to give a wide angle view of the finish when the horses race against the stand side rail.
The only way to get a better angle would be to have the camera at the end of the stand closest to the parade ring, but that would then make it impossible to provide worthwhile pictures of any close finish.
With the River Severn right behind the stand, there aren’t any other options for siting a camera and it seems to me that Racetech are in a no win situation at Worcester.

October 19, 2006 at 10:59 #80496To be fair to Hoiles as well, that thing finished like an absolute train.. Everything else was standing still in comparison.. Bit like Noland winning the supreme novices last year
October 19, 2006 at 12:53 #80497Alan yes Ive been to Worcester and take your points on the general layout but they did show the race again with a clear view to the fast finishing horse.
No comments re the placing of ads up to 3 secs before a race they intended to cover.
October 19, 2006 at 18:50 #80498Seagull, I agree totally with your point about the ads. I suppose the thinking is, as far as the advertisers are concerned is, that there will be a bigger audience for the ads. if they are shown just before a race goes off. Of course, I am much more cynical, I just think it is a ploy not to show the horses before the race!! ;)

October 19, 2006 at 19:28 #80499I agree with the comment about the ads but I have to defend Richard Hoiles in general, as he usually impresses me by never missing a trick. He’ll spot a jockey losing his whip on a horse jumping the last at the same time as he’s calling the winner past the post. <br>If he missed something he must have had a good reason for it.
October 19, 2006 at 20:03 #80500I’m glad ATR is ‘subscription free’ if you pay the excessive amounts for the other sports channels. However ATR are obsessed with ads and it is definitley to the detriment of their coverage. A couple of Sundays ago they had pictures for 4 meetings including the Irish and the put Wolverhampton (and it was a decent card by Wolvers standard) behind the red button. Now as there was very few if any clashes I can only presume they did this to ensure they had plenty of time for lots of the same annoying adverts.
October 19, 2006 at 20:45 #80501Richard Hoiles’ oversight at Worcester is excusable for all the reasons previously stated.
I’m not sure there’s really the same excuse for the erroneous reports in the printed media in the last couple of days that:
– Twisted Logic has little to offer away from Towcester – it’s Exeter where he wins race after race, not Towcester,
– Lambrini Mist was stuck up 9lb for winning at Hexham – it was Kelso where he won.
Diligence, people. Diligence.

January 3, 2007 at 21:59 #649<br>Bit of a shame IMO that ATR have done away with their usual ‘Stateside’ programme to coincide with the TVG contract. It was good news hearing that they’d managed to get coverage from some of the top tracks but I thought that they’d keep the studio format as it was and just take the TVG feed for the racing/the interviews.
Aside from the Triple Crown races & the Breeders Cup, I have no interest whatsoever in US racing but the banter on there with Compo, Chapman, Weaver & McKeown/viewer interaction was great fun IMO. I remember reading about listeners of Test Match Special who wanted rain to interrupt play just so they could listen to messrs Johnson, Baxter, Bailey, Trueman, Aggers & CMJ having a laugh and it was a similar format here.
As it is now they’ve gone the whole-hog with presenters based in the US although Chapman is in the booth for when the Americans go to their numerous ad breaks.
January 4, 2007 at 05:50 #35162I didn’t realise they’d done that. Yeah I used to enjoy the banter too. The racing alone isn’t enough to keep my attention but the studio hosts made up for that.
January 4, 2007 at 11:44 #35163I only ever watched it because of the familiar presenters. I won’t be watching anymore.
January 5, 2007 at 14:10 #35164There still seems to be a lot of movement of tracks between TVG and HRTV. TVG has just lost Oaklawn to HRTV.
However for me-the main thing is the ability to see the Aqueduct and Belmont Parkmeets and be in a strong position for Saratoga-which is something that hasn’t been possible for 2 years
Will miss Barry F and a couple of his mates. Not much else.
January 5, 2007 at 20:22 #35165Entirely agree with PAULCS. American racing is dire and the only reason for watching was the banter between Dave Compton and co.
January 5, 2007 at 22:08 #35166Dilysb – the stuff they used to show on ATR was the US equivalent of Carlisle, Catterick, Brighton and Folkstone flat meetings. Now we’ll have the proper stuff though FWIW you can make serious money on maiden claimers, particularly the low grade stuff
January 9, 2007 at 00:25 #35167I love my American racing, but the new stlye is a bit boring to watch. I mean im glad to see the good races now, but with no banter the times does go very slowly.
January 9, 2007 at 15:37 #35168I’m annoyed at the rubbish poker they put on at 11.30pm when they should be trying to get the West coast races up – Santa Catalina etc. particularly now we’re in trial season
January 9, 2007 at 16:38 #35169<br>But Stateside moves to ATR Xtra when the poker starts you know.
