A large field currently declared for this although rather low in quality. Three Anglo-Irish entries, Noble Yeats, Franco de Port and Carefully Selected, the former the most interesting entry though will have to do better than his last attempt over the course when he only made it as far as the fourth. This usually goes to a young, improving horse who has shown good form in the recognised trials, and this year, only last year’s runner-up Gex fits the bill; also of interest for me given the good record of five year olds in the race is the mare Altesse du Berlais, winner of the Grade 1 for four year olds on this card last year.

Seems like a good – and intriguing – race to me and I’m looking forward to it.

Do they heavily water here regardless of weather? Looking through the form, nearly every race at Auteuil is run on either very soft or heavy.
The course was down as very soft 2 days ago but it has been dry since with decent temps.
Anyway, just for fun I put Gex on at 3/1 to go one better than last year as he is in good form and a small each way stab on Rosario Baron at 18/1.

Yes, they do. During the season they often run meetings three times a week and they water heavily to stop the ground getting rough.

Ah fair enough, nice one MW, that enhances my optimism for the selections.

I’ll go with ews on good old Poly Grandchamp who could probably jump round here blindfolded, bright young thing Starlet du Mesnil, and Bandero who is probably not classy enough but a really likeable horse, should stay, I saw an interview with his trainer that I could barely understand a word of (my bit of French from secondary school really not up to much) but it’s obvious she adores him.
    Good luck all.

Willie’s wait for a winner of this goes on. I wonder which not-quite-G1 horse he’ll try next year? Gaillard du Mesnil probably, but I think the fences might rattle him.

He might be better off earmarking a couple of bumper horses for it that are good but maybe not future top UK/Ire G1 horses, then skipping out a full novice hurdle campaign but gearing 2 seasons around winning it with them when they’re no older than 7. The likes of Lecky Watson perhaps.

I was pondering on the fact that he’s worked out how to win all of the UK races but not the French.

I think it’s because the horses he runs in this are has-beens or never-quite-was-s at the top level and the race is usually an afterthought for most of his runners. Franco was targeted at it all season- but only because he turned in a respectable performance in it last year when he was a may-as-well runner before being sold. They then took the sales sticker off his bum, pretty much.

I expect the French trainers target this like Paul Nicholls targets the King George- at least two years out.

It was interesting to see Noble Yeats running in this one as well. Has there ever been a horse that completed in a Gold Cup, Grand National and Grand Steeple in the same year?
I think you can only win of them….. But they’ll know better next season.

The Fellow in 1994 had a good go, getting as far as the second Canal Turn, but not sure any horse has actually done it – perhaps Spartan Missile or Jay Trump, though not sure if they completed in the same year.

Had the Gold Cup been established a few years earlier, Troytown would probably have won all three.
