Well, I guess the best horse won it. But, with everybody getting round we get once again the proof that the changes made last year make the GN course easier than the Mildmay.
I know the horses competing today are very decent jumpers, but the obstacles don’t seem to be a proper test of jumping any more. As much as I hate horses falling or being injured the GN fences still should be more than just a couple of plain ones.November 9, 2024 at 15:22 #1712274Nice to see David Pipe picking up a good prize.

They wont be satisfied until every horse in the “national” completes the course. And then they will hail it as a great success.
November 9, 2024 at 20:05 #1712302If the old style Grand National fences were still there the place would be a museum.
The old style Grand National with fallers and too many deaths would not be accepted today… And neither should it imo. That said, tbh this year’s Grand National was a bit much even for me. Seeing all those horses in with a chance two out. However, today’s race went some way to prove good jumpers still have an advantage and The worst jumpers still have a disadvantage. It’s just not as much as it used to be. When looking at course specialists who do well in several chases over this course, they are invariably good jumpers. Horses don’t need to fall for serious errors to ruin their chance – Idalko Bihoue… And the best jumper won today’s race – King Turgeon.
Value Is EverythingNovember 10, 2024 at 07:15 #1712338As someone said on Betfair, Red Rum wouldn’t have won one National never mind 3 over these powder puff excuses for fences.
It isn’t a jumping challenge anymore and the excitement has gone. Maybe the sport should be closed down entirely rather than allowed to become even more a farce.
Even the brave winner of the Badger Beer just went through 2 of the last 3 fences when surely tiring, although the mistakes seemed to make little difference to his impetus.November 10, 2024 at 09:20 #1712348The fences aren’t jumped any more just gently knocked down , the point of a fence is a horse to jump it …
November 10, 2024 at 11:31 #1712355Absolutely no challenge at all. It’s farcical. Imagine if you could have shown those who saved the National back in the 70/80s a clip of the National course in 2024 they probably would have thought why bother?
There are trickier fences at Plumpton which just about sums it up. If jump racing isn’t about jumping then exactly what is the point?
November 10, 2024 at 18:37 #1712390I thought the fences looked bigger than your usual park fence.
I enjoyed watching the race tbf. Agree with Gingertipster’s assertion about King’s Turgeon there.
But I realise I’m in the minority, and I’m ok with that.
What I did come in here to say was to complain about the camera angles. I only watched it on the Sporting Life website (using RTV pictures) so I cannot comment on what ITV showed, but the angle chosen as they went from Foinavon to the Canal Turn was pathetic, and even worse then they showed the leaders turning from three fences further down! The most interesting fence they jump on the course and they just didn’t show any of it properly.
November 10, 2024 at 18:46 #1712391Pretty sure ITV showed some sort of view from the rear at a distance for the Canal Turn I thought it was odd.
