A decent Sunday European group 1 day here with British hopes in both races. The French race isn’t usually much to sniff at but it looks a better renewal this time round.
For a bit of extra why not have a go at the German Derby where Frankie Dettori, Hollie Doyle, Richard Kingscote and Cieren Fallon have rides. The British and Irish flag bearers for the French group 1 all have questions to answer, the one standout being multiple group 1 scorer Hurricane Lane (Appleby/Buick) who made an underwhelming comeback at Royal Ascot albeit on Firmer ground than ideal. That being said, he’s won at group 1 level on perfectly good ground before so the excuses for being pretty well beaten in a group 2 might not sway especially when considering he is a shade of odds on. Wouldn’t be a surprise if he won but not for me right now.
I won’t bark on about the others but I will put up a penny or two in the hope that Sir Mark Prescott is very happy with Alpinista. I think she’ll drift out to more than her current odds of 13/2 due to the difficult start to the season the trainer has had so I’ll hang on till tomorrow. I watched a couple of his more recent runners and they made average/poor comebacks but this mare is a different animal. I hope they do have her spot on because in spite of yard form I think she’ll run a true race.
The German Derby was fun to go through, there were plenty of in running comments to find, I didn’t look for any visuals. I liked Sammarco at 11/2 5 places on offer, he beat Dettori’s mount last time in a group 2 over 11 furlongs, staying on past him. I like the jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, he’s been a fairly prolific group winner over in Germany for a few years now. Obviously they don’t have many group 1 races and any they do tend to get mopped up by our mob so it would be nice to see him grab a group 1, I don’t think he has one yet.
France – Alpinista (Small bet)
Germany – Sammarco (medium bet)July 2, 2022 at 20:41 #1605095Sir Mark said she is training well but would have liked more time as she has been slow to come to hand – I can see her running well but fitness finding her out and I would have a watching brief on her this time.
For me Hurricane Lane needs to win this with a bit to spare in order to make up for his average return in the Hardwicke and justify his Arc chances as if connections stay true to their plans he will only have one more run before the Arc after this.
July 2, 2022 at 21:05 #1605096Yea, a small bet is basically a watching brief for myself. I think I’m also compensating for missing out on La Petite Coco last weekend (still can’t get my head around how she drifted to 9/1, bonkers).
Sir Mark’s comments 4/5 days ago were positive enough for me to take a spin. I don’t expect her to win but I just get the feeling she hasn’t reached her ceiling yet. A good run would certainly entice me on to some ante-post markets.July 2, 2022 at 22:21 #1605102https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_de_Saint-Cloud
The Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud has an illustrious history, but I shall simply be watching tomorrow.
Hurricane Lane should be fitter now and Softer ground will suit, but will it be Softer?
Dodgy Going descriptions and race distances, standard times that get broken in the “mud” – no, thank you!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 3, 2022 at 02:12 #1605115German Derby = Team Event. 70% of the 20 runners are trained by three trainers: Markus Klug 7, Henk Grewe 4 and Andreas Wöhler 3.
Hoping for Hollie or Richard Kingscote. Both seem to have good EW chances.
July 3, 2022 at 10:33 #1605120Hurricane Lane for the win.
July 3, 2022 at 11:01 #1605122I will bow to Chiver’s German form wisdom and go Sammarco ew 4 places :o)
July 3, 2022 at 11:02 #1605123I expect Hurricane Lane to win but stuck a solidarity pound on Lone Eagle at 25’s betfair

July 3, 2022 at 12:56 #1605132Good call, Nathan. I’m also on Lone Eagle EW. Hollie has a 2nd and a 1st place from two rides at Hamburg so far, I’ll go with her EW in the Deutsches Derby Team Event.
July 3, 2022 at 14:47 #1605136Had a free bet for the day so added Ardakan.
July 3, 2022 at 14:59 #1605137Big delay while they sort out the running rail on both sides of the track at the start.
It appears to have collapsed in the heat. Not very efficient. Jockeys have dismounted and horses are being kept cool ( hopefully). Although I’d say this will have quite an effect on the outcome.
Twenty horses mean twenty stalls and they hadn’t figured that out so they have had to widen the chute at the start.
Off course the stable teams are all at the finish so no water for the horses and jockeys sheltering in the stalls.July 3, 2022 at 15:06 #1605138Wd winners. Hurriane Lane poor there.
July 3, 2022 at 15:08 #1605140nice performance
July 3, 2022 at 15:08 #1605141Really didn’t expect her to win first time out, Arc must be on the agenda now especially considering how badly out of form the stable are and she was still able to win.
Edit: this was his 6th win of the season and his first since May!Hurricane Lane no showed and being turned out just 15 days after Royal Ascot clearly took its toll and begining to wonder if keeping him training is going to pay off…must be worries about Adayar now to after all his missed engagements.
July 3, 2022 at 15:08 #1605142Frankie Detorri must have a good chance drawn in the middle.
July 3, 2022 at 15:15 #1605143Get in!
July 3, 2022 at 15:19 #1605144Wd Chivers :o)
