In my younger days that is what I thought of the Topham as.

Edit: And as several contibutors here, plus the Chief Handicapper and the Aintree Executive would point out, there is also the Becher Chase in November, which only got a single figure field, I think, this time.

I know I keep on about him but the more I look at him the happier I am with Kilcrea Castle. Connections have got to have a go off this mark.

He’s got Orchestra in him (sired Miss Orchestra to win the Midlands National and Relaxation to win the NH Chase), and Monksfield (damsire of Monty’s Pass) and Gala Performance (West Tip and Greasepaint).

I think he’s related to old Harbour Pilot (willing to stand corrected) and watching a rerun of that race behind Casey Jones he certainly wasn’t stopping and had some confirmed stayers behind him that day. Couple that with how well he jumps and I am actually quite confident.

Quite frankly any horse sired by Old Vic will have a chance. The last 3 Becher Chase winners (all entered) were sired by him and of course so was Comply Or Die… among other great horses…

Would it be possible to merge the two National threads?

Vikingflagship must be from the betfair forum – where most people start a new thread whenever a new thought pops into their head.

erm no actually  i have been a member of the racing forum for a number of years and each year have done a separate place, for the weights, never been a problem before, it was somewhere for people to check the weights and form, rather then it get mixed up in the main grand national discussions, only people this time choose to discuss tips there as well as on the grand national sat 19th april thread

my sister lives abroad but wants to put bets online, she was asking about seven is my number, i don’t really know much about the horse, can anyone provide me with info on form, distances he’s used to? ground etc

    vf

Seven is My Number has won 5 chases this season ranging from 2 miles to 3 miles 1. In that 3 miler he beat the likes of Beat the Boys and Tatenen, so it was by no means an easy race, but not the most competative considering there were only 5 runners. He was only 7 lengths behind The Last Derby in the 3 mile United House Gold Cup, so he should be able to stay at least until Bechers 2nd time round. A real confidence booster is that he has never fallen, so we know he can jump round. He did however pull up on his last outing in the 2 mile 5 Betfair Trophy Chase, so maybe the 3 mile+ scene is what he wants.

His last two wins were on soft ground, but they were only fields of 2 and 5. His other wins were on goog, good to firm, but those wins were over 2 miles – 2 miles 5. So he seems to handle all grounds.

He’s carrying 10-13 so he has a handy enough weight, but he’s only 8 years old.

All in all he’s not without a chance, but i’d look elsewhere myself…

thanks for that, hymm the young age puts me off, but i will pass this info on to my sister, thanks

Chelsea Harbour conked out, so you do need a good mare too. Vic Venturi’s mare is by Torus who if memory serves me was responsible for Mr Mulligan so you’d be hopeful but Black Apalachi’s mare is by former champion NH stallion Be My Native (who had/has a very bad record in the National).

In actual fact you would think it was Mr Pointment who was more designed to stay extreme distances with Ardross in him who sired plenty of four mile winners in his own right, but it didn’t work out like that in 2008 but perhaps he will last longer with 14lbs less on his back this time around.

    Yes, Viking.

When I lost my Grand National spreadsheet a couple of weeks ago, and had to input the names again, I used your entries thread as it was easier than waiting for the RP page to load.

    2 down, 28 to go.

    Grauniad:-

Dessie Hughes said Siegemaster would not run as he is "feeling the effects" of his run on Saturday, while Louping D’Ainay was said to be an unlikely runner by his trainer, François Cottin.

Not important, but I just want to correct and enlarge upon the above. This is from the Times:-

    Francois Cottin (Louping D’Ainay 10st 12lb):

“He has been off a long time and will probably have a prep-run at Auteuil in three weeks’ time and take it from there. I’m happy with the weight. Fitness will not be a problem but he has had problems.”

I’m fairly sure that Mark wrote something about Don’t Push It somewhere.

Just in case you haven’t come across it elsewhere:-

‘Don’t Push It is going for the Pertemps Final and then Aintree. He’s a good jumper and will keep going.’

Hasn’t run in a qualifier, so he must have been in the entries for an abandoned one.

What’s more it’s clear that some of the Irish horses are terribly handicapped

Don`t know what goes on in Smith`s mind – some correlations look very odd. Can`t be easy though I think he`s tinkering on too many levels.

Know Irish trainers have been unhappy in the past but it hasn`t prevented them entering in large numbers, 25 of the first 60.

Mullins has conceded Irish Invader doesn`t stay so no idea why he`s entered him.

Watching the race yesterday I thought he did well on ground not favourable. Seemed to stay on well and certainly am more confident now than before the race about my bet for the Grand National.

    Your thoughts??

Why is it 7/4 with Stan James for the winner to carry more than 11 stones?

Most (if not all) of the shortest priced horses are / are possibly going to carry more than 11 stones this year.
If Mon Mome ends up top weight even Big Fella Thanks will be 11-1.
Stan James appear to be looking at previous Nationals and not at this year’s race.
Things have changed in this century.

He obviously stays more than 3 miles as he won the Scottish National, but his current mark is extremely tough. He again gave it a good go from the front yesterday even though taken on by Our Vic, and the testing ground obviously sapped his stamina levels in the end. If there’s good ground at Aintree he’s well worth an each way bet and his style of running will stand him in good stead.

I like his chances for Aintree. Just hope they are very aggressive on him. Would like to see him front running in a clear lead. He jump so well that, off his light weight, he could have them all in trouble and take a bit of catching if clear at the 4th last.

He has paid the price for a very successful 2008 season though, his rating is very high for quite an old horse. I think he’s value eachway, but can’t seem him winning it to be honest. He always front runs so no worries on that score, just needs the fast ground though.
