There’s going to be an awful lot of front runners the way things are going! Pity that so many didn’t get their hurdles race yesterday. Can’t wait to see the entries. Still feel that there’s a dark horse lurking somewhere that’s off the radar at the moment. [Have always loved horses whose name begins with ‘The’; not sure why].
January 31, 2010 at 14:17 #273235The Tother One might be one for you then Moe – Nicholls said he might get an entry in the race in his RP column yesterday.
January 31, 2010 at 14:19 #273240I think there should be a limit to how many horses one trainer can enter in one [handicap] race.
January 31, 2010 at 15:41 #273257I use to love it when Martin Pipe had loads of runners because you could discount most of them straight away. The odd good one ran but by and large most of his never stood an earthly.
I really hope the race goes to another small stable as it has done frequently in the past. Sometimes it’s as if the race itself can stick two fingers up at the more powerful yards so I do hope we will be seeing the likes of a Buckler, Scott or Curran in the winners enclosure in April.

He has it in bucketloadsJanuary 31, 2010 at 22:22 #273318I’ll have a look at the Daily Lays & Plays Section tomorrow Halfway, to see how you’ve been doing. Haven’t looked at it
since the return to work in the New Year, too busy/distracted.
Nicconi turned the month into a winning one for me.

February 1, 2010 at 15:44 #273443If I had a betfair account I would have been able to fill a page with my bets by now, but as I’m resticted to the high street bookies I’ve got Big Fella thanks 25/1; Niche Market 25/1;Hello Bud 40/1; Backstage 25/1; Character Building 33/1; Dream Alliance 33/1 and Snowy Morning 40/1. All, hopefully, guaranteed a run [not sure about Backstage]. 50 pence ew. When the weights come out I’ll probably back every 9 or 10 year old that looks like a definate runner. Then, on the day of the race I’ll back all the horses I’ve left out!
February 1, 2010 at 16:24 #273450Think you’ll be fine with Backstage as long as they enter him. IIRC he’s been sold by the staff of the yard to someone who wants a National runner, should be fine off 148.
Think anything on 137 and up will get in.
February 1, 2010 at 17:03 #273456Haven’t checked the story, but I think the stable staff sold a half-share or something in Backstage.
In the autumn I thought the cut-off might be as high as 143 or 144. However, not many chasers have gone up the ratings, whilst quite a few have gone down, what with the new (?) BHA policy of quickly dropping ratings as well as raising them, I’ve given up having a clue as to what the cut-off will be.
Have just crept over the £1000 mark. I do wish there would be a warning when I’m backing a horse less than 99 in price rather than higher than 99.
February 2, 2010 at 13:26 #273596Entries for the Grand National closed today and interestingly there are fewer entries this year than for some time – 111 entered.
Last year (Mon Mome) there were 122 entries & the cut off for a run was a mark of 139, 10st5lb.
2008 (Comply or Die) 149 entries, cut off rating 137, 10st7lb
2007 (Silver Birch) 119 entries, cut off rating 134, 10st2lb
2006 (Numbersixvalverde) 150(?) entries, cut off rating 134, 10st4lb
2005 (Hedgehunter) 152 entries, cut off rating 134, 10st5lbOf course it depends upon how many highly rated horses are amongst the entries as to where the cut off may be. It is entirely possible that the entry number is down as those rated below 130 have not even bothered this year. We won’t get a feel for it until names of entries are revealed & until hey are handicapped but I wonder if horses rated 134ish are going to get a run this year, unlike in the last two years??
February 3, 2010 at 10:36 #273738Any thoughts on a dark horse of Johnson’s – Frankie Figg. He’s probably the best jumper of the National fences I’ve seen to fall twice over them. Seems very unlucky and the Johnson horses – he jumps beautifully and has a nice enough profile in that he’s unraced since November when he fell behind Dev. Only worry for me is his handicap mark (132) but I’m hoping that the handicapper gives him a slightly higher mark given his form over the fences.
Abbeybraney is another one – it would be very very dangerous to right off a Johnson horse over the big fences, particularly after the way that Bewleys Berry, Theatre Knight, Frankie Figg and Bestofthebrownies have seemingly come alive over the big fences in the last few years.
February 3, 2010 at 10:55 #273742I was wondering about Abbeybraney; cost a lot of money when they bought him and he was on KC’s list of horses with stamina in abundance last year.[are you thinking about Nine de Sivola with the cut off point dp?]
February 3, 2010 at 14:37 #273776Only just got back home.
Had a quick glance, and Church Island, Garde Champetre and Miko De Beauchene don’t have entries.
Tizzard confirmed in the Weekender that Joe Lively will be aimed at the National. Now I know that Moe will worry about Joe’s size, but he only has to survive the first circuit, as the fences are smaller the second time around.
I’ll try producing a list in OR order in a hour or two. Was supposed to be cooking, but I suppose I’ll put that on hold.
