Gamble, 0.2% per race not per year! Since horses tend to run between 5-10 times a year (Mark Johnston’s or David Pipe’s easily up to 20 times) the fatality numbers are a lot higher. That’s why some internet sites provide us with an average of 100-200 racecourse fatalities a year. You also need to know what happens to the racehorses that don’t make it to the racecourse or to the ones you never see after 1-2 races.
April 16, 2023 at 16:17 #1644094I suspect we could deter most of the people that are protesting by telling them that they definitely won’t be sent to prison. But they will get to do 200 hours community service at a hotel occupied by Albanian ‘refugees’.

0.2% is 0.2%.
0.2% per race is 0.2% per year, Ruby.Value Is EverythingApril 16, 2023 at 16:56 #1644100No, Ginge. He was referring to the entire racing population of around 14,000 horses.
If your horse runs 10 times year his yearly fatality rate is not the same compared to a horse that only runs once a year.
Check this out, at bit outdated, but still relevant:
April 16, 2023 at 17:00 #1644102Of course the chance of being a fatality will increase depending on how many races a horse runs. But the point is the number of runners that don’t lose their lives goes up in the same way.
Value Is EverythingApril 16, 2023 at 17:03 #1644104Says a lot about how these people think. And, to be fair, there should be more information provided about what happens to the thousands of horses that do not enter training.
Kevin Blake was talking about this new StandUp4Racing project this morning; this is the kind of information that needs to be out there.

Value Is EverythingApril 16, 2023 at 17:45 #1644111“It is likely that…”. Until the BHA supplies adequate information it invites these groups to make things up to fit their agendas. GT is right about racing not being the end of it too. We’re dealing with people who won’t eat honey because they say it exploits bees.
On the subject of blinkers, I think there is definitely an argument for banning them in the National. Looked like Envoye Special’s blinkers got dislodged. He certainly didn’t see the fence as he plunged right in to it. Not the first time this has caused a fatal injury to a loose horse in the race. I imagine the nature of the fences and flying birch makes it more likely headgear can shift. I can’t believe that it isn’t possible to redesign them to make it impossible but, if not, I’d support a ban, despite regular wearers being potentially disadvantaged.

Good. Working dogs are very useful, but what purpose do pet dogs serve? Companionship? Yeah- I’ll sit there and discuss the day’s news with the dog. Or maybe take it out for a meal at a nice restaurant. Right.
And as for cats, all they do is kill birds and small rodents. Bloody useless animals.

A point racing should emphasise. A lot of these protesters are unhinged militants.
They should be asked what will happen to all the horses if racing is banned. And what will happen to the thousands of people thrown out of work.
If more people understood the aims of militant political activists and what sort of life they have in store for us if they ever got their way, there would be a great deal more resistance.
April 16, 2023 at 17:57 #1644116Got it Red ! so that’s a 1.5% annual death rate, given the beasts race seven and a half times a year, which might be a rough average as it splits your 7-10 runs.
Corky is right about the Liverpool lovelies – they need to get out on the Lash at least once a year in a green animal rights setting. I do believe the National is still a national event and still talked about on the odd street corner.
Farmer Bum was most probably the laziest farmer in North Yorkshire.
“Missus – I’m taking Big Ned down to Sheriff Hutton for the two o clock – I’ll back at three to plough the field.”
Farmer Bum’s wife…
” Fair enough dear it’s high time you got down to some work, but do be careful with the horse he’s got 20 times less chance of getting back alive than you of enjoying your triangle of stewed beef and those lovely dumplings I’ll prepare for you after ploughing that field.”
Farmer Bum…
” Those are grim odds missus, but as I only work 10 days a year, my reckonings are me odds are a lot worse than Big Ned’s cos I’m out of practice.”
Farmer Bum’s wife…
” So sounds to me like your changing yer mind – you’ll be getting just yer carrot and onion soup and a bit of cod mixed in if you don’t get out on that tractor ”
Farmer Bum…
“I have changed me mind missus – I’m going to have a bum day “
April 16, 2023 at 18:12 #1644121The person that set up Animal Aid did actually say man keeping dogs is wrong; reasoning the dogs are not in their natural wild state and have been programmed by man to be what man wants them to be.

April 16, 2023 at 18:45 #1644126Thanks Nathan,
Won’t be on here long though.
Never been addicted to betting but possibly have to TRF.
Spent too much time here.Value Is EverythingApril 16, 2023 at 18:52 #1644130Is the Grand National a problem racing doesn’t need?
April 16, 2023 at 18:52 #1644131There seemed to be a lot of veering around over the first few fences leading to a pincer effect on some who fell or unseated. One of JP’s possibly Capodanno who looked to be pulling hard seemed to be an offender. Wonder if a pre determined draw for zones across the track with an expectation to stay within them over the first 3 might alleviate some of the bunching.
