Wasn’t it one of the young women referees on the other table?

Absolutely no criticism of her but she was quite understandably not going to take on a male intruder.

The security at a lot of these events is poor. OK, no one is expecting anyone to intrude. But someone could have had a knife. I doubt people go through any kind of search into the Crucible.

My worry is these protestors could start to adopt more extreme measures. They are fanatics and clearly think they are entitled to impose their opinions on everyone. The sort of people for whom the end justifies the means.

Forest Green’s owner (who sounds like he should be spending a bit more money on his football club and a bit less on political causes) cites the suffragettes as some kind of inspiration. They did not mind planting a few bombs and burning down buildings. It is fortunate no one was killed at their hands.

He’s had a lot of emails supporting him. He’s also had a lot of hate mail. How can anyone do that to someone? What is wrong with people?

I met a friend for lunch today and I was afraid she might be mentioning the race, She was so angry with me because I like racing. So I can quite understand what Sandy is finding. Unfortunately people are not thinking clearly about the issues here.

Many years ago I was offered a job by a then uncle of mine of some influence, who moved in certain circles entertaining politicians of the old hey day including one John Profumo CBE and possibly others who had less talked about girlfriends, and this job I was offered on a plate involved travelling the world and valuing ships for Lloyd’s. Back then it was not what you knew but who you knew. I was stuck up my own artificial *rse and declined the big pay day and easy street for a stab at Look back in Anger and I can ferry cross the Mersey in my own boat – as the Doors sang – People are strange. He and his wife always had tea at 5pm and then he would go to his oak panelled office and have a large whisky every single day, regular as clockwork. He had his whisky one day but his whisky glass fell to the floor and that was sadly his last one.

Some years later I was invited to spend an evening with Ginger McCain with a close friend of his who was interested in striking up a partnership with me. The evening would have involved Rum of course inevitably of the red variety, and without doubt a high consumption of whisky and certainly well into the early hours. Ginger loved his whisky and had a lot of yarns, but GOD ONLY KNOWS, even the Beach boys wouldn’t have passed up that opportunity even for a Baywatch babe – but muggins did, and my nemesis in the sock drawer often rubs it in.

Joe Cocker was a milkman so there is hope for all of us but just sometimes it’s good to listen to Joe’s message and take just a little help from your friends.

    Je ne regrette rien

I was formerly of the opinion that those who would otherwise be protesting against horse racing have been swept up by the climate change obsession to have any time and energy left to focus on the sport – however, the fact that they’ve now randomly linked the two together, along with other issues, such as the custom of owning a cat or dog, means that ( as similarly echoed earlier in the thread) they’ll ruffle the feathers of the great majority of the population and will become enemies of the people. It’s actually a much needed bit of good news for the sport.

Not much I can add to this conversation, except not all deaths are foreseeable.

Hear The Echo in 2009 suffered a heart attack after crossing the line, similarly in 1984 Earthstopper finished in fifth place as part of the record number of finishers. Do Rightly in 1998 suffered one during the race.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

This National sticks in my mind and the grey was described as the best looking horse in the paddock.
Similar sentiments all those years ago. Phil Tuck describes the enjoyment of the occasion from the horses perspective which indeed is interesting.

“Phil Tuck, who rode Dark Ivy, arrived at his home near Penrith, bruised in body and spirit and anticipating complaints: “Of course people will say it’s too dangerous. They’re bound to say it’s cruel and we shouldn’t bed doing it. Everybody connected with Dark Ivy is upset. He was a lovely horse, and what happened top him broke my heart. But I still believe in what we do.”

He added: “Did you notice Brown Trix? It unseated its rider at the third fence, but carried on round the two circuits on its own and led the winner past the post. A horse would not do that unless it was enjoying itself. It doesn’t have to carry on after losing its rider. There are plenty of ways out. When Aldaniti made his gallop before the start it was obvious that he senses where he was and loved being back. Red Rum is the same whenever he makes an appearance. He carries on like a two-year-old.”

Approaching Becher’s, Tuck had every reason to believe that Dark Ivy was settling into the pace of the race: “He made a little bit of a mistake at the first, but jumped the ditch well and I thought I was in for a great ride. Then at Becher’s he popped in a short one.” Tuck paused to reflect upon the split-second of disaster, then added: “The lad’s in no pain now.”

“Tuck, whose facial scars are testimony to the rigours of his trade, endeavoured to put the bad experience behind him. “I’ve just got to get myself together and carry on,” he said. “I still have a job to do”
