Is it still a minimum of 6 chase starts in order to qualify to run?
I see Salvador Ziggy has only had 4 chase starts and Meetingofthewaters has 5.
If it is 6 chases by when would a horse have to run it’s 6th race in order to qualify?
February 20, 2024 at 20:02 #1681869The 6 chase rule still applies, but they appear to have moved the deadline back, as it used to be weights day. I would imagine it is the second scratch day as that is the deadline to meet the 3 mile deadline. So around the 24th of March.
February 20, 2024 at 20:24 #1681873As per my post from a few pages back which I’ve updated to reflect Fiddlerontheroof having now run in a chase this season and an extra run for Favori De Champdou, still a very unlikely runner for what its worth. I’d say anyone on 4 chase starts currently won’t be an intended runner here.
Worth noting quite a few on the list aren’t currently eligible to run but have chance to change that, need to have qualifying runs done by 26th March.
Need to have run in 6 chases under rules:
Classic Getaway (5)
Letsbeclearaboutit (5)
Meetingofthewaters (5)
Riaan (4)
Salvador Ziggy (4)
Favori De Champdou (4)Need to have run in a chase under rules this season:
Mr Incredible
Le Milos
SamcroFirst 4 in a chase over at least 2m 7.5F:
Adamantly Chosen
Ash Tree Meadow
Embittered
Riaan (fails on 2 counts so far – see number of runs above)Also need to be rated 130 or above by UK handicapper when weights are decided on Feb 18th.
From what I can make out the UK handicapper has presumably decided the following aren’t worth a 130 mark as they have no weight allocated:
Battleoverdoyen
Fakiera
Its On The Line
Placenet
Royal Thief
So Des FlosFebruary 20, 2024 at 20:51 #1681879There definitely needs to be some tweaking on the entry qualifications,I’m not entirely sure 7 year olds have any business running in the race despite Noble yeats win.
I’d open it up for horses that have have run in a 2 mile 6 race or further and entries must be in their second season chasing .
They must have run in 8 or more chases.
Even now the majority of horses that finish in the first 6 are usually battle hardened having run in chases with decent size fields so are used to the hussle and bustle .
The last qualifications would be to sack the majority of the board who’s main concern is how much revenue they can bring in.
Their reasons for stopping reserved said it all if you read between the lines ,their goal is a squeaky clean race so they can sindicate it out to even more countries every year .
The race should be owned and run in isolation by those that understand the spirit of the race.
The fences are fine I’m my opinion but the race could do without speccy accountants more concerned about their bonus to keep their duck lipped partners In cologen.February 20, 2024 at 20:52 #1681880Thank you Peter and Tin Man 👍👍😎
February 20, 2024 at 21:11 #1681882About getting into the race, I think with only 34 declared a lot more of these top 34 will try to get in, as they have six fewer opponents to fear, more room to maneuver, potentially less riderless horses.
That’s why I won’t go too far to the bottom weights expecting them to run.February 20, 2024 at 21:49 #1681891I backed Vanillier at a big price antepost last year. He does look quite well treated again and he has obviously been trained all season with this race in mind.
I expect I will back him but I sometimes think horses get one shot at the National and last year was his chance.
February 20, 2024 at 22:33 #1681896Thanks for the updates on eligibility TinMan, very helpful.
The 6 chase starts need to have been achieved prior to 26 March this year. As peterh says, this is also the date for the requirement of having finished in the first 4 in a chase over at least 2m 7.5f.
Its On The Line and Battleoverdoyen may have been ineligible due to having run in a hunter chase this season rather than because the handicapper did not rate them highly enough. However, as it was an Irish hunter chase that they ran in I’m not certain.

Noble Yeats 18/1Value Is EverythingFebruary 21, 2024 at 00:02 #1681905The winner of the 2024 Grand National will be trained in Ireland, be aged seven, eight or nine, and, while figuring in the top 34 in today’s weights, will not have had its mark exposed by too prominent a display in a 3m-plus chase since the autumn.
Consequently these are the only 11 who can win it….

If it’s now:
With the Timeform “X” Farouk D’Alene should be taken out.Value Is EverythingFebruary 21, 2024 at 14:38 #1681958If Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott run all their entries (despite perhaps not fancying some of their chances much) they will severely limit the chances of various horses from other yards making the final 34.
I predict they will henceforth do this every year until such time, if any, that there is a rule change to prevent it.
