Are these still going strong?
April 28, 2016 at 10:43 #1243788No – the last horse actually owned in partnership was the hurdler/chaser Power Shared. His last run for us was in Nov 2010.
Subsequent to that I had Langley who ran in the partnership name, but no shares in him were ever sold and he was claimed in October 2011 by Tim Vaughan. Then I used the money from the claim to take a 50% share in a chaser called Tarateeno that Pat Murphy had been left with when his original owners went bust. He, sadly, broke a leg on the gallops in March 2012 and I’ve had no involvement in any form of ownership since then.

April 28, 2016 at 14:44 #1243802Mike,
I get tempted when I see something that looks interesting in a claimer or a sale, but then reality sets in and reminds me that although i could cover the initial outlay OK, the costs have risen to point where the annual outlay would be more than I could afford. So it would be a gamble on finding another one like Salute that could pretty much pay his way from prize money won – and my long term experience is that horses like him are very hard to come by.
I’m also now working with a leading trainer on the placing of his horses, which gives me an involvement in the bit I always enjoyed most without having to pay out any training fees!
As an example of temptation, there’s a 3-y-old colt called Mystic Blaze being sold at Tattersalls Newmarket tomorrow (Friday). I saw his debut on the July course in a classy maiden full of good looking horses – since then he’s left Clive Brittain after he retired and has raced only on the AW for Balding. I reckon gelding, a return to turf and a step up in trip are what he needs. He’ll probably fetch close to twenty grand, but off his current mark, can only race in class 4 handicaps paying four to five grand to the winning owner, so you’d need to win four of those just to cover his running costs.
April 29, 2016 at 11:20 #1243874Mystic Blaze sold for 16,000 gns, but I’ll never know if he’d have been a good purchase as he’s on his way to race in Greece.

Out of interest, Mystic Blaze suffered a fatal injury last February when he received a fracture at the metacarpus and both sesamoids of his left foreleg during a race. He had won his maiden in his previous race by over 12 lengths when his jockey received a final warning for excessive use of the whip despite winning easily. Both races were over 6 and a half furlongs.
