I am not really criticising Bowen. I can understand why he kept going on a strong stayer. Betfred did pay 4 places but I doubt he even knew or cared about that.
But if the horse disappoints in the Grand National, you can guarantee everyone will be saying he left his race behind at Cheltenham.
March 18, 2023 at 12:05 #1640480Best Gold cup winner in a good while anyway, even with the odd sticky jump. Much the best.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!March 18, 2023 at 12:10 #1640482Imagine if Galopin des Champs had stepped on a stone and didn’t run
People would be saying Fury Road was down the field in the Ryanair, Stattler couldn’t go the gallop and Irish Gold Cup 5th finish 29l behind Delta Work in the Cross Country..
Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 18, 2023 at 12:45 #1640496If GDC hadn’t turned up id have been quids in and we,d be saying how an impressive winner BMG was , such is life
March 18, 2023 at 12:53 #1640499Been trying to put a figure on that having watched it back a few times, the right horses in 2nd/3rd, has to be atleast 185 anyway, but similar to CH, its hard to put a figure on that, he could have won further, he really didnt appear to have a hard race atall and there was no stopping at the line
March 18, 2023 at 13:05 #1640502He had a hard race Ham , they all did , the GC breaks horses , touch wood the front 2 arent effected long term
March 18, 2023 at 13:48 #1640508Yeah it was tough to take from a personal financial perspective but it’s not hard to be gracious about it when you’re beaten so comprehensively.
Very exciting from a sporting perspective though to see where all the runners from the race go next. I reckon there’s plenty of winners to come out the future races!
March 18, 2023 at 15:03 #1640515Cracking performance by the winner a touch overshadowed by the crazy over the top praise for Townend by AP (especially) and Ruby.
Don’t write off Ahoy Senor for next year. Ironically, they seem to have schooled out of him that step to the right he used to take just before take off to put himself on the correct stride, though he had vey little room to execute the move anyway. He’ll be back.

Now how did i know you were going to say that. :o)

As nice a horse as he is Steeplechasing, he’s not in the same league as Galoping Des Champs.
If this years winner turns up in good form, Ahoy Senor and the others will be racing for places.
March 18, 2023 at 20:48 #1640537For me Ahoy Senor is always going to be that horse that comes with a caveat of ‘he will at some point try to take a fence or two home with him’ and at that level you just can’t afford those type of mistakes………that being said even with a clear round he wouldn’t have beaten GDC, who to my mind seems to have not far off the perfect blend of speed/stamina.
Doubt it will happen but seeing him and Allaho clashing at any distance between 2m4f-3m would be epic…..with Allaho going in front but being stalked all the way by GDC…….
March 18, 2023 at 21:32 #1640542Hdlg, of course he had a “race” but i disagree, it doesnt “break” that many horses, especially in recent years, apt a win and a 2nd, minella indo win and a 2nd, ABP two wins, djakadam consistent runs, the list does go on, what horse has it broken recently?
Its a bit of a myth for the most part
Id be fairly sure its not breaking a horse whos barely turned 7
March 18, 2023 at 23:07 #1640550Djakadam was only a 6 year old when 2nd to Coneygree so could have had bags of improvement left in him. He may have improved slightly after his first GC but not significantly.
You could argue it just about finished Coneygree although he had plenty of problems before and after his GC win.
Of recent horses, Might Bite is the one who suffered most after his punch up with Native River.
A lot depends on the type of race and that was pretty brutal yesterday.
March 18, 2023 at 23:14 #1640551Rumour has it that at the next General Election, Joe will be asking bemused polling station staff why there is no “Ahoy Senor Party” candidate on the ballot paper.
As stated, as a Point-to-Point racegoer, I like many others, like the horse, but the only way Ahoy Senor wins the 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup is if he jumps off now.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 19, 2023 at 07:21 #1640571Ham how many GC winners won another race after winning one ? , look at APT , is he unmarked from his win , this back up what I say , outwith Kauto and Denman in recent years , Native won a couple of grade 2s after , his toughness was one of his strengths , Minella won a match with The Stattler , Sizing John , Coneygree , Don Cossack , imperial commander all horses that were never the same
March 19, 2023 at 08:22 #1640580And regarding ABP’s 2 GCs taking nothing away from him.
The horse was very lightly raced. Just one run a season before each GC run and looking at the form of the 2021 renewal, Santini and Lostintranslation who were 2nd and 3rd were never the same since. At 8 years old they potentially could have improved. Either the 2021 renewal was awful or these were two more horses where the GC left its mark.
March 19, 2023 at 08:30 #1640581“2021 renewal, Santini and Lostintranslation who were 2nd and 3rd”
That was 2020, not 2021. That renewal wasn’t great, but Santini appears to have lost his appetite for the game as well. Whether or not that is due to the hard race he had in the Gold Cup, who knows?
