Ginge
Going was too quick for Cue Card………
Horses change, Nathan.
As I said before the race, there was a question mark. Cue Card’s early days were full of top class Good ground performances. However, just lately has disappointed on it. Travelling reasonably well three out last year in similar conditions – where some thought he would’ve won – but I now feel it was too far out to know where he’d have finished. Possible Wouldn’t have found much on that surface. So yes, you might have been right. Only might, mind. Just as likely (or more so) today’s run could easily be put down to the Tizzard virus. Unlike many, I don’t have a definite opinion about most things, it’s all percentages with me.
Value Is EverythingMarch 17, 2017 at 16:10 #1293099Sizing John was selected by quite a few so well done to his supporters. Unfortunately, I just didn’t think he’d see it out. I was firmly in the Native River camp and think Johnson should have kicked on and played catch me if you can rather than wait to be joined and get done in a sprint to the line as it turned out.
I thought a couple of sticky jumps stopped any notion of kicking on from a long way out. The horse idles in front as well and they purposely didn’t go too soon with him last time. I thought he rallied well to chase Djakadam and head him again after one sticky jump but the next time it happened he didn’t quite respond in the same way. He was game enough and just lost 2nd place in the end. I was on at 33/1 but win only, so no half cigar for me. Not even a two strand roll up

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 17, 2017 at 16:13 #1293104I was hoping Richard Johnson would try and kick on earlier in an effort to get the speed horses out of their comfort zone , but it seemed as if Native River was going as fast as he could and just lacks toe .
Well done to Sizing John and those who backed it . As a sidenote : it makes Douvan’s defeat the other day all the harder to take as on the seven previous occasions Jessie Harrington’s horse has met Mullins’ star chaser , it has been left floundering behind the big horse each time .

Douvan had a stress fracture to his pelvis. I am not sure how much difference that would make but he never ran to his form in any case. Hopefully he can bounce back.

March 17, 2017 at 16:26 #1293108Didn’t Cue Card have a similar problem a few years back [along with his breathing problems?]. [yes; 2014/15 season]
March 17, 2017 at 16:35 #1293111Well done to all SJ backers. Truly thought he wouldn’t stay the trip on his Irish Gold Cup showing but was certainly proven wrong. Just shows what a machine Douvan is too and hopefully he can bounce back from his injury.
Glad to see Cue Card get up from a nasty falls as well. Was never able to get into the position he wanted and never traveled as smoothly as he can. Often see him change gear and move up a few places mid-race but he could t do it and was always held ina6th or 7th. Maybe it was the ground but maybe it was time catching up with him.
As for Native River, I think it would be interesting to see him just do a little less early on if he gets back to have another go. They definitely went a good pace early on I think.March 17, 2017 at 17:07 #1293122I don’t think Johnson could have gone any quicker: ground probably went against him
March 17, 2017 at 17:27 #1293131I’m sick of reading / hearing how it is good ground at Cheltenham. It’s good to soft no quicker and was soft earlier in the week. Check the winning times. Only two have sneaked on to barely standard the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup.
It isn’t and never has been good ground all week.
March 17, 2017 at 18:53 #1293170Well done to Sizing John supporters and a great win for Jessica Harrington.
Followed BDM to the bitter end and disappointed with his jumping throughout but at least he finished and all horses came back safe and well.Looking at the results over the last 4 days and especially the Thursday and Friday can anyone put their hand up and say that they made a profit on the meeting overall and how did this year’s Festival compare to last in that respect.

March 17, 2017 at 19:35 #1293187After four days of fun and enjoyment and admiration for courage and athleticism of both jockeys and horses I have lost the princely sum of £46 !!
I consider that great value for money for four days entertainment!!
And I have had soooooo many what if’s but then so have many others.

JacFriday was my saving grace. Had a pony e/w on Champagne Classic @25s and 40 e/w on Rock the world @10s Plus e/w returns on Bapaume and Winter Escape. Still massively down on the week as a whole. Over a grands worth of A/P bets that either didn’t turn up or had no return. Days 2 and 3 we’re financial wipe outs. Tiger Roll @16s saw me levels for Tuesday. I’ll be givin Aintree some stick then thats it then till October – i’ll leave the flat to the flat experts.
March 17, 2017 at 23:57 #1293271Well done with those big prices Jaymo it’s the Ante Post non runners that seem to soak up the cash and I don’t touch them at all so end up with skinny odds on the day of the race but didn’t lose much with average one winner a day the best being Willoughby Court followed by Nichols Canyon two great races but I backed Whisper who just got hauled back by Might Bight but can’t deny that was an amazing race.
Worst moments Nicky Henderson losing Consul De Thaix in the first race of the meeting and seeing Cue Card go down but then hearing he was up and OK.
My nerves can’t take anymore think I’ll get some hot cocoa and a hotty botty and hibernate until the Craven Meeting.

Here here Moe..have to save up for next year now.

The one that got away for me…
ARCTIC FIRE … How on earth did he go off at 20/1
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 18, 2017 at 00:41 #1293283Thankfully I couldn’t not back him; he’s such a favourite of mine. Although I also backed another horse called Arctic something or other by mistake the day before as well. Tiger Roll is one that I’m really annoyed with myself about, and Domesday Book that raymo tipped. I have fond memories of being in a bookies in Nottingham, backing Arctic Fire ante post for the Champion Hurdle the following year, watching him win his race in Ireland and seeing his price shrink. I allow myself to have loads of bets with my Coral account, because, in the past it cost me a couple of pounds in petrol just to go to the bookies each day. There was an amazing punt on that Champagne horse today which, thankfully I saw on oddschecker and was able to throw some pennies at it [but then didn’t have the courage to listen to the race]….
March 18, 2017 at 10:42 #1293316Prior to the race, I envisaged a strong gallop, with Native River taking it up on the 2nd circuit and grinding it out – with most of the others dropping away one by one. However, it did’t happen; as there were still plenty of horses with a chance running downhill. (as confirmed this morning on ITV by Noel Fehily).
Djakadam seemed to be going too well if anything, and his mistake cost him 2nd place. I think Sizing john is a pretty decent winner; campaigned at 2m, then 2m4f, and won the Irish Gold Cup over 3m. Seems to have it all for a staying chaser; speed, stamina, good jumper.
Native River and Minella Rocco seemed to confirm last years 4m form; and maybe with proper soft ground could have been closer??
