Haven’t seen it, don’t want to see it – what the **** happened? That’s racing I suppose is the answer as usual.
March 14, 2014 at 17:57 #471839At which stage did Casey overuse the whip? [Daft question; I know it was at the end of the race but did he use his ‘extra’ whips trying to counteract being pushed sideways, or had he been hard on the horse prior to that?] Only asking cause I’d been thinking that is OHO had won there propbably wouldn’t have been an enquiry and if there had been OHO winning would have been justified.
March 14, 2014 at 18:04 #471841Incredible race to watch; on a line through The Giant Bolster about the same quality as the last 2 yrs. Reminded me of Forgive’n’Forgets Gold Cup, so many in with a chance at the last. Mixed feelings on the inquiry.
Didn’t see the result coming, last yrs novices had seemed an ordinary bunch, but Lyreen Legend also finished close, would have been closer except for bad mistake 2 outMarch 14, 2014 at 19:11 #471861It doesn’t say much for our premier steeplechase when 3 glorified handicappers fill the first three places.
Maybe it’s just me, but I do like to see our best/class horses take the major prizes. The form just doesn’t stack up. False result.

March 14, 2014 at 19:30 #471865Think it just goes to show what an extra special horse you have to be to win 2 Gold Cups. I thought BW probably would win today but at the price would not touch it. Had SC to win and OHO ew. Jumping the last I thought SC may just win but keeping a close eye on BW up the hill. The allegiance soon changed and feel gutted for Casey/Mullins although you have to be pleased for Culloty, 10 years since BM’s final win and Russell, who remains a great jockey despite losing his job at the start of the year. Can BW do a Kauto and regain next year?
March 14, 2014 at 19:34 #471867I think we’re probably going through one of those phases that happen when the giants of racing leave the stage. It seemed like that to me when Dessie retired. We’ve been spoilt by seeing incredible horses for the past few years. I was only saying today how strange it is these days that people now expect a Gold Cup horse to win it several times whereas it used to be unheard of. Maybe just running 3 times a season isn’t the magic answer that trainers thought it was.
March 14, 2014 at 19:54 #471876Was quite a muddling race – the ground being maybe softer on the inside ? the joc’s would be able to say but it looked like it on the way the 3 finished. RSA winner wins – a year older and now we know a year stronger – but out of form before today. Agree that we seem to have been spoilt the last few years – very difficult for horses to win back to back gold cups – something we have forgotten.
I wasnt keen on bobs worth because of the above – I didnt think last years form was that strong and the proximity of him and the giant bolster would lend me to think this years form isnt any better than last years. Tough as anything TGB though 2nd 4th and 3rd.
Well done to the winner.
March 14, 2014 at 20:00 #471877Remember when everyone thought Imperial Call was so good he could win it for several more years? I know I’m repeating myself but the best horse wins the King George; the best horse on the day wins the GC. And amazing horses do both.
March 14, 2014 at 21:10 #471902Couldn’t help notice that the 3horses charging up the hill all ran jan/feb leaving bobs worth and silvinaco conti behind, maybe they both blew up having been wrapped in cotton wool since Christmas?
March 14, 2014 at 21:48 #471909The ground was against both principles, BW and SC.
Lord Windermere came from last and at one stage I thought Davy was going to pull him up so that could suggest they went too fast but having said that On His Own was up with the running, they all looked tired at the end and were running all over the shot so in essence On His Own run his heart out and Davy rode the ride of the season.Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 14, 2014 at 22:20 #471923Did they plan to make it a real test of stamina with OHO I wonder? Or did it just pan out that way?
March 14, 2014 at 22:28 #471925I’m not sure Moe, he ran in last years Grand National so possibly wanted to make it a test of stamina.

March 14, 2014 at 23:27 #471941In his blog, Barry Geraghty said that he thought he got the ground wrong, said he felt that Bobs Worth didn’t like the ground. Something wasn’t right, that’s for sure.
March 14, 2014 at 23:35 #471943The most underwhelming, confusing Gold Cup I’ve ever seen. For me, the result was the photo finish for runner up spot had Cue Card been in … if that makes any sense!
March 15, 2014 at 01:03 #471956Can’t see that Rob. Stouter stayers than Cue Card were out-stayed today.
Agree with Betfair and disagree with the knockers – TGBolster gives the form a familiarity for years gone by. A normal standard renewal.
The winner getting stuffed off 154 in the Hennessey reminds me of Long Run getting gubbed off 158 in the Paddy Power. How could either happen? Sometimes handicapping seems a waste of time.
We as punters have little chance have we? Leaps of faith, rather than form book studies, are required for winners like this.

Bobs Worth has run well over a stone below his best. He’d have had this lot for breakfast on his Hennessy or 2013 Gold Cup form.
