I’ve clearly overlooked the Redcar 2yo trophy! Will have to have a look as I’m intrigued as to how many backward-bred horses they have.
The Market Man – you have a very valid point on Godolphin’s purchasing policy. Half of the horses they "snap up" are never seen again (I still wonder about Bull Run…). Also I don’t see how they’re not yet breeding some decent sorts with the range of stallions Darley now have.
However I think Godolphin have also done a lot of good for racing in the past – keeping older horses in training has rubbed off on other outfits like Ballydoyle – and I’m pro Dubai World Cup. Some recent policies may be questionable but overall I don’t think they’re any worse than Coolmore or any other of "big guns".
August 14, 2006 at 19:18 #75415Mesh, Bull Run was entered in the Ascot Gold Cup and the Hardwicke this year but didn’t run so would assume he’s still about, albeit minus his wedding tackle now. Agree with you that they do a lot for racing and also a lot for the punter as well. Doubt there’ll be a HRA investigation into one of theirs!
August 15, 2006 at 14:57 #75416Doubt we’ll be seeing the Tranquility Lake colt out in the Derby (he’s to be called Liwa’s Oasis IIRC).
Seriously hope that PR is right and that most of them have been sent to Albertrani and McLaughlin. Bin Suroor does nothing but muck them up, take Afrashad – blistering debut at 2 and then nothing till he turned 4 where he’s developing into one of the top sprinters :)
August 15, 2006 at 17:07 #75417Didn’t Afrashad get beaten in the US the other night and is to be dropped in grade?
August 15, 2006 at 17:54 #75418Yes. He needs dropping in distance too.
August 16, 2006 at 10:08 #75419Still has the Sprint in the bag though IMHO – I have utmost faith in him and was amazed at his time in the allowance back in May/June time, was less amazed when a stakes horse went C and D in 1 1/2 seconds quicker lol.
August 31, 2006 at 15:33 #75420I see that Simon Crisford stated that at least 75% of Godolphins very expensively assembled two year olds will remain unraced this year.
He cited the fact that they had to stop work with them in May as the main reason.
Bizarre….
August 31, 2006 at 16:22 #75421Presumably that means there will be another big shopping spree at the end of the year of all the non-Ballydoyle two year olds in order to have something for the Guineas next year?

Bull Run won a maiden at Windsor and small field conditions event at Epsom in April 04 when trained by D Loder.
It was then gelded
It injured a forleg in May 04 and hasn’t been seen on a track since though still shows in training with godolphin
September 16, 2006 at 18:15 #75423They have a 2yo entered next friday at Haydock – Chief Operator, half brother to Crimplene.
