Was about to sit this one one out, but I keep going back to Freewheelin Dylan. He’s risky. He’s obviously up in the weights for his Irish National heroics, he’s inexperienced in this sphere, and he’s not known for travelling outwith Ireland, but he should get perfect ground for him round this course, and I can see him bowling along nicely out in front.

Those negatives are significant, but I think 12’s is fair. I’d have preferred the 16’s, but I held off too long.

Fact Of The Matter appeals too, but he’s got options on Saturday, so my backup may be Alpha Des Obeaux, who’s been given a proper chance by the handicapper. I could see me adding him.

Enough negatives, so hardly going mad here, but thought it worth an early bet.

    Alpha very interesting too.

    Freewheelin Dylan 12’s

I’m very confident that Back On The Lash can run a big race here, and I’ve taken 10-1

Fact of the matter does not take up this intended entry. So I have to agree with Jeff back on the lash

I’m really bamboozled by where the handicapper has got this rating for Balko Des Flos from – I mean he’s not even a 161 horse at his age over regulation fences never mind these ones where he unseated on his only try. I really wish I had some inclination as to what to take him on with because he’s a terrible favourite here giving lumps of weight away.

Singing Banjo is in to better company here, but I don’t think that he is anywhere near a 25-1 horse. He is my ew selection

Usual bunch of a few specialists and a few ‘running out of ideas’ so we might as well try cross-country, but Back On The Lash comes out top of my figures. Progressive and if he adapts to the peculiarities then will take a fair bit of beating.

Potters Corner has been given a chance by the handicapper and is 11lbs lower than last year’s third place effort. The rest of the season was a bit of a dud and he was a no show in the Grand National. I haven’t given up on him just yet and this seems realistic.

I’d prefer a horse trained and targeted at XC races than a bunch of badly handicapped has-been and never-were chasers having a go at the kiddie’s sports day obstacle race in lieu of retiring. (It’s a bit harsh to call the Irish National winner and Aintree runner up that, but they are, and BDF won’t like the ground).

I’m putting my ew shekels on Fox Pro, and I like Mike’s selection Volcano as well but will only bet one.

WD Jeff, viking and rob. A good race, decent horse and a good ride by Sean Bowen.

Thanks greenasgrass, hope that doesn’t encourage me to get too heavily involved in these events!

The second Singing Banjo is a mark of how idiosyncratic these contests can be. Running off a mark 81 in ‘regular’ handicaps of late, but his Irish banks form suggested he’s much better going cross-country and so it proved here.

I’ll say it again and I’ll keep saying it Sean Bowen is one hell of a good jockey , really can’t understand why a big yard hasn’t snapped him up , if I was Fry I,d have kept him as no1 jock
