    Was happy before, but finding love has put the cherry on the top. Don’t think I want to go in to it any further Drone. Please don’t feel sorry for me, it is really only a very minor thing. It’s just when someone accuses me of something that I myself find abhorrent, this problem I’ve got blows it out of proportion, gets to me more than it should and I turn in to a big baby. Usually like a good piss take even if at my own expense. :good:

    Is it 31st Jan already. No you’ve still got 117 days to do your tax return ;-)

    It’ll soon be October 31st when we who prefer the paper Return have to get it in by. I considered the electronic Return some years ago but found the sign-up procedure too complicated, particularly as my tax affairs are now quite simple and only warrant the ‘Short’ summary form

    On receiving it in April it always goes to the top of my in-tray for immediate scrutiny but tends to bury itself unnoticed and forgotten beneath utility bills, junk mail that-may-one-day-be-useful and yellowing copies of Private Eye until I hear a faint whimper around this time of year

    death, taxes and nurses…

    Absolutely brilliant Nathan, no wonder Ginger couldn’t keep a straight face,
    even if he had wanted to. It was all a bit of a storm in a teacup and this site
    would be all the worse without Ginger and Steve. I know Ginger knows this, I hope
    Steve looks in to see that he is valued here.

    Ahhh…the holy trilogy, death taxes and nurses. I feel that one of those has slipped
    outwith my grasp Drone, but it did take me back a bit B-)

    @Drone

    “Return some years ago but found the sign-up procedure too complicated, particularly as my tax affairs are now quite simple and only warrant the ‘Short’ summary form”

    I should persevere Drone as once you get your “Gateway account” it is so easy to submit your tax return on-line. (You can make adjustments before you actually submit it.)

    Do you really need to file one at all nowadays if it is relatively simple? I know plenty of people who were still in self assessment but after contact with HMRC they did not have to file a tax return again. All depends on your circumstances.

    I still pay my NI Class 2 as a voluntary contribution in monthly instalments which by definition means I’m registered with the IR as self-employed and therefore presumably have to complete a self-assessment tax return

    I did write that my tax affairs are “quite simple” not very simple, and some years are more complicated than others as I still have bursts of honest graft from time to time

    In the past I have questioned with the IR whether I really needed a ream of supplementary forms and they did play ball and reduce them. Perhaps if I stop voluntarily paying NI Class 2, which I could having exceeded the 30 years required to qualify for the full state pension, I’ll no longer have to self-assess
