Probably found the ground too firm last time out and/or hated being held up in the Ebor. Pulled too hard penultimate start when leading in Goodwood Cup (finished last). Before that settled well at his beloved Newmarket untroubled on the front. This is Ascot and trainer Tim Easterby doesn’t seem in as good form as he was in September. imo WFG needs his own way and a lot will depend if anything takes him on and/or if able to get the lead without rider pushing him (otherwise can take a strong hold). Both Morando and Sextant can race prominently but don’t need to. Main worry is whether Vivid Diamond goes forward (always races prominently). Had the latter been a speed horse at the trip I wouldn’t have expected VD to take on WFG, but the Johnston animal’s strongsuit is imo stamina so that horse’s best chance of winning is if there’s a strongish pace – unlikely to let WFG relax in front. However, I will be keeping an eye on what happens early-on. ie If settling with a softish lead then Wells’s chance will imo be far better than the current 4/1 20%. May even take as short as 11/4 after the first furlong. But if taken on then his chance will be a lot less than 20% 4/1 and may even be worth laying in-running.
As far as the pre-race market goes – I wouldn’t take less than 11/2 as I think the chance of him getting a soft lead isn’t as high as I think the market currently predicts.
