Breaking news – Gigginstown House Stud are removing 60 horses from Willie Mullins yard this morning.
Willie – “Yes we’re parting company. Its over fees. I put my fees up for the first time in 10 years.”
    More to come.

In shock over this. Willie is going to lose some very very good horses. I would imagine Gordon Elliot is about to get a few very good ones.

I’d have bet Ricci would have gone first. Mullins will have to be careful now with Ricci.

    From the racingpost –

GIGGINSTOWN HOUSE STUD have removed around 60 horses from Willie Mullins after a disagreement about the Irish champion trainer raising his fees.

Confirming the split with Gigginstown, Mullins said on At The Races: “Yes, we are parting company. It is basically over fees. I put my fees up for the first time in ten years. Gigginstown chose not to pay them.

“I’m not willing to try to maintain the standards I have [without putting the fees up], so that’s the way it is.”

Mullins admitted that the loss of such a large amount of horses, including Grade 1 winners such as Apple’s Jade and Don Poli, will be a blow but was magnanimous and wished Gigginstown the best.

“They will be very hard horses to replace. I don’t know where they’re going to go,” Mullins said. “They [Gigginstown] have been great to us with some fantastic horses and we wish them all the best, but we move on.”

In reaction to the news, Paddy Power have pushed Mullins out to 3-1 from 6-4 to win the British Champion trainers’ title.

It will be easier to manage Riccis horses now. Looking down through the o Leary horses that Mullins had the only two very top class ones are Apple’s Jade and Don Poli. He had plenty of others knocking on the door like gangster, arkwrigst, devils bride, a toi Phil, measure of my dreams, McKinley, stone hard, tell us more, outlander, blow by blow, avenier dune vie, bel sas.there are a lot of nice horses there but none that were going to be Cheltenham winners other than Apple’s Jade and Don Poli.

He will fill those 60 empty boxes fairly quickly id imagine. Hopefully o Leary will spread out his stock among struggling trainers.

Isn’t it such a pity that O Leary wouldn’t give Colm Murphy ten of them to keep him going. It’s not as if he can’t train top class ones.

As we speak O Leary has four trainers left- Elliot, Meade and Morris, de Bromhead.
Last season he had Elliot, Meade, Morris, Martin, Hughes, Murphy, Griffin, De bromhead, Mullins.
I don’t rate Hughes or Martin but it can’t be good when a huge owner supports less trainers.

I find it laughable that O Leary has removed his horses over a petty little thing like training fees!
The money he scams out of every passenger on his flights and he’s squabbling over fees with arguably the best trainer there is right now. At least he knows he’s getting his monies worth with Mullins. Ryanair….what a joke!

What a hypocrite that man is. Money, money, money!

He’s obviously running his Racing operation like his business which in essence it is. Ryanair’s prices are so cheap due to using the cheapest suppliers/labour available otherwise O’Leary would not be a billionaire. He probably thinks he can get as good a deal at Elliott’s or other yard’s at a cheaper price. So I would say he is not been hypocritical just putting his Airline business practices into his Horse racing operations.

As a punter I think it is good news. 60 less horses to dither about before Cheltenham. Hopefully, Apple’s Jade now has a considerably better chance of making a Champion Hurdle.

When these break ups happen imo there’s a lot more to them than owner or trainer admit to. If I were an owner in the Mullins stable I’d object to how my horse’s targets are dictated by what races other horses in the yard go for. I also believe riding instructions for some have been very questionable. eg Don Poli was ridden asthough a doubtful stayer in the Gold Cup.

That was my initial thought. It is not as if Gigginstown are short of a bob or two. It seems from the outside that Mullins likes to control almost everything. You could see that when he steered everything away from Hurricane Fly.

So quite a hefty rise if true – 10% in one hit, although no rise for the last 10 years. So that’s €5 per day * 60 horses = €300 * 365 days (presuming they pay for every day of the year  ) = over €100,000 per annum. Even if some may have holidays away from the yard which may not be charged you are still probably pushing €100,000 per year rise. Over 1 million per year in fees or €20,000 per horse. Quite staggering.

That’s fair enough, I was just trying to say that as cheap as his flights maybe in some cases, he fleeces every single traveller for absolutely everything and anything else. £6 for an inedible sandwich, extra cost for bags etc. They even tried charging me £5 so I could “jump” the queue to get on the plane, even though it was designated seating!
He fleeces his customers no matter how cheap the flights are, he gets it back in other ways. Just find it laughable he’s not prepared to pay what Mullins he asks….. yet it’s exactly how he runs his business….

I agree Don Poli was ridden poorly by Russell but was overrated going into the race. On your other point, what gigginstown horses were stopped from running in their preferred race due to Mullins having other options? I can’t think of one. That couldn’t have been the reason

I agree regarding his business practices and that’s why I try to avoid Ryanair if flying to Ireland. I’m sure all these extras are in the small print but not many people read that and that’s how he makes his money – customer’s ignorance. As I have said above it’s approx €100,000 in extra fees which equates to about 15,000 extra inedible sarnies. We have the choice to use Ryanair or not, O’Leary has the choice of which trainer to use.

I’m sure it is all about fees. O’Leary won’t pay the extra 100 grand probably asking Mullins for a discount as he has a high number of horses with him. Mullins says he can’t as it’s not fair on the other owners who will also want discounts if they found at Gigginstown were getting one. O’Leary threatens to withdraw his horses. Mullins says Sorry to hear that but fine. Can’t budge on this one.
