Hi again to everyone and in particular to my fellow golfing comrades Swallow Cottage and Mikkymo.

Well after getting a return courtesy of my first reserve last week hopefully i can do things legally this week

So without further ado here we go again with this weeks conundrums.

Starting of with the Singapore Open, it must have taken quite a juicy carrot to prize some away from the Volvo Masters so for that reason Ernie has to have a say, along with Lee Westwood and my dark horse who seems to do reasonably well in the far east tournament’s Prom Meesawat.

Moving on to the afore mentioned end of season decider the Volvo Masters and here for me it’s more a case of who do i leave out, courtesy of a quiet day at the office have decided to go 4 handed here, Messrs Harrington, Stenson, Dredge and Ross Fisher, had thought long and hard about the field marshall :) but decided in the end not to, might live to regret that but hey wouldn’t be the first time.

Moving west to the Children’s Miracle Network Classic Quite a mouthfull if ever there was one, a very open look to thing’s here 25’s the field in places will have to visit BF to see if i can pinch another couple of points.on Tim Clark, Stewart Cink and my E/W for this Woody Austin, if TC decides to take another week then will replace him with Sean O’Hair, don’t feel that DC can strike again.

It seems at first glance that the elder statesman are having a week of or there season has finished in which case finally for me the Ladies and the Mizuno Classic, will take the bull by the horns here and side with a sizeable E/W on Angela Park.

As always whatever your choice’s Good Luck.

Well done again wakeman in backing another winner last week with Chopra……wish I knew your secret in managing to back all these winners on the golf :)
My autumn golf betting has been a bit of a mini disaster really so it’s more with optimism than any confidence that I am betting on the following this week —

Singapore Open — I have never bet on this tournament before. Can’t fancy Mickelson in his present form and I am going to avoid betting on Adam Scott who is going for the hat trick in this event. Ernie may go close but my money is on K J Choi who has improved this year and should like the conditions.

Volvo Masters — One of my favorite Euro tournaments as it’s a difficult course and good iron play and accuracy is needed here. I am surprised that Sergio is as short as 7/1 for this event as he did not play especially well last week in a weaker field. He does love this course though so could win it but his odds do not appeal to me. Luke Donald has not played as well as he can recently but he also likes this course a lot ( which is made for his style of play imo ) so I am hoping for an improved performance. My other selection is Anders Hansen who is an accurate player and odds of 80/1 on BF look value.

Childrens Classic — Yet another easy course ( by professional standards ) with lots of birdies to be made and as I have said previously on here with similar tournaments in the USA, it will probably be just a case of which player is hottest with the putter this week. It’s 25/1 the field which sums up how open this tournament is. I would probably do better by using a pin to choose my selections but I am going to give another chance to Heath Slocum who played poorly last week but is an accurate and good putter usually. My other selections are Nick Watney who played well at this event last year and has played some excellent rounds this autumn to put himself in contention before messing things up but will hopefully be more consistent this week + Cameron Beckman who has played his best golf of the season during the last month.
    Good luck

Yes, many congrats on another winner Wakeman. I tend to stick to the European Tour when placing my golf bets, but if you keep putting up winners I might have to start following you in

As for this week, well what a cracking event for the Volvo Masters. My first selection is Soren Hansen. I can’t believe that you can back him at 40/1 generally, around 45 on BF. When you think of the form that he has been in the last few months, compared to that of Garcia (who cant putt and is short priced fav), Harrington (who seems to have given up the ghost since winning the Open), Rose (who finds it hard to win) and Donald (who doesnt win) then the 40/1 looks huge to me.

So as you have worked out, I’m opposing Garcia, Harrington, Rose and Donald (the first 4 in the betting), but I wil be having some on Ian Poulter at 16/1 generally. He is a little short (in the betting, not height) for my liking, but he has come on bundles in the last 6 months and I feel he is a winner waiting to happen.

My final selection has to be Niklas Fasth AGAIN, who I seem to have followed all season. But he has some great course form (7th 2 years ago, 5th last year) and by his own admission, his game is much improved this season. He seems to be in contention regularly and I will be backing him at 20/1.

Sergio Garcia is too short a price for me, but if he does get the putter to work, he will surely take all the beating. I don’t think he has finished out of the top 5 in this event for the last 3 or 4 seasons and his game looked solid last week. But if you don’t putt well, you don’t win.

    Good luck all,

    Mike

Another bad week for me then

Unlukcy with Tim Clark Wakeman, I hope you backed him each way.

Regarding the Volvo Master, I would like anybody’s opinions on the last day. Personally, barring the top 10 or so, I thought the rest of the field should be ashamed of themselves for what I would only describe as ‘not trying’.

The weather conditions were arguably no worse than they had been all week, in fact, it was probably the calmest day of the four – yet anyone who didn’t have a chance going into the final round basically just turned up, never thought about their shots, and went round as fast as they could in scores near or over the 80’s.

    Here are some final round scores;

    Soren Hansen 81
    Peter O’Malley 80
    Colin Montgomorie 79
    Sergio Garcia 79
    Luke Donald 78
    Richard Sterne 78
    Niklas Fasth 77

There are many scores I could put up, but what is noticeable about the above scores, is that out of the 4 rounds, the score above is each respective players worst round of the week.

To me it just stinks of unprofessionalism. Obviously I could be totally way off the mark here and these playes might just have struggled while trying their best – but somehow I doubt it. To me, it was basically, "what time is my flight" golf.

You are probably right Mike as the players could not win and it was the end of the Order of Merit for this year so they did not really try which is a bit unfair to the fans. Probably another case of sportsmen having too much money but at least they did not quit which is something which regularly happens in the USA where the prize money is greater. Quite often a player will suddenly develop an injury and withdraw when he has no chance of winning. Sometimes I think some players will deliberately miss the cut when they have no chance. I remember once when two players out of contention both hit their balls into the water on the 18th hole of the second round……deliberate or not?

J B Holmes recently did not turn up for the 2nd day of a tournament having had a bad first round ( He won earlier this year so does not have to worry as he qualifies for the pga tour for 2 years due to his win )
I admire the honesty of Boo Weekley who says he does not like golf but just wants to make enough money so he can retire early and go fishing and hunting for the rest of his life :)

Yes Boo is quite refreshing

Do you remember the Michell Wie incident earlier in the season? I think the Woman’s PGA have a rule that if any golfer shoots a round in the 90’s, then they can’t play on the tour for the rest of the season. I’m sure there are exceptions to this rule, and the score I’ve quoted might not be the exact score….. Anyway,

Michelle Wie was having a nightmare round (as this over-rated golfer often does) and I think she was about 15 over par with 3 holes to go, 2 of them being the toughest and longest on the course. Knowing about this rule, she suddenly developed a wrist injury, so severe she couldn’t swing a club. She withdrew citing injury, and the rule didn’t then affect her, leaving her free to continue playing on the tour.

The next day, she was seen playing a full round of golf as if nothing was wrong with her  . Absolutely nothing was said, other than the media to bring it to everyone’s attention

Yes Mike, I remember that incident with Wie – I guess nothing was done because she is such a crowd puller. She is laughing all the way to the bank but I think she has been badly advised regarding her golf career and would have done better sticking with the women’s tour and leaving the men’s tour alone.
