Hello all,
Does anyone have to hand the fixture list for Germany during 2009 and could blat it into a post on there, please?
In particular, I’d like the fixtures for January and February within the next 24 hours, if at all possible.
Reason being – Ryanair have got 1p return offers on flights to and from around 100 destinations, so long as they are booked between Tuesday and Friday of this week, and as long as they are taken before February 15th.
There are five or six German racing towns / cities in the list, including Berlin, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Zweibrücken. I’ve already half ruled out Frankfurt, as I know from experience that Ryanair’s interpretation of what counts as Frankfurt doesn’t tally with anyone else’s!
If none of these courses are in operation, I might try Pau – also on the list – instead if there’s anything going on there.
Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

This is the official website for German racing. No dates shown beyond the end of this year.
You might want to contact some of the tracks. Neuss and Dortmund are likely suspects for winter racing. You’ll get info here:

have to remeber that cold weather kicks in harder in germany than here so must be doubtful there would be much racing around
But Berlin and Hamburg (was there a few weeks ago) are great underrated cities
Cheap flights to Hamburg go to lubeck, which is a beautiful town in its own right and 50 mins train from centre Hamburg ( a really realxed and charming destination)

Jumps racing in Germany takes place at Hoppygarten.

Hi Jeremy,
I’m afraid it’s only Dortmund until early March, meeting once a week on Sundays. I’m actually going to Dortmund on Saturday (first ‘Winter Raceday’ of the season, then Sundays after that) – I’ve got two horses running that I’ve got shares in with Christian. Monkey is right is that Neuss usually has winter racing, but the course is closed for re-development at the moment, and I don’t think it’ll be open until 2010. Hoppegarten, Bremen and Saarbruecken near Zweibruecken) usually splutter into life around Easter. Hamburg only has the one meeting a year in June/July, Duesseldorf starts in April, and I think Zweibruecken is about May.
I’ll see if anyone has a 2009 fixture list when I’m at Dortmund, and I’ll get one for you.

Aye, that’s the first place I tried, ta! It’s a bit surprising how hard it is to get German fixtures even two or three months hence – I seem to remember looking for winter fixtures in similar-ish circumstances a few years ago, and even those omniscient old birds at IRB weren’t able to provide a list. Strange.

Cheers, Clive, grand to catch up with you also!
I’m from a family of Germans so know the lay of the land pretty well, and me and Mrs C spent a somewhat extended evening in the corrugated shed that is Lubeck airport just over a year ago – she’d piled through most of her duty free by the time we boarded!
Were it not for the dearth of steeplechasing in Germany, be assured that I’d quite happily move to Berlin and eke out a happy, eccentric mid-life / retirement there; skinny-dipping in Krumme Lanke, playing Nina Hagen really loudly whilst pelting up and down the Avus-Ring, and scoffing hackfleischblaetterteig in a Kruezberg Kneipe.
…and if not Berlin, then certainly Hamburg! Definitely my two favourite cities in the country. Munich can sod right off, though.

Excellent stuff, Darren, many thanks! I’d not heard that Neuss is being tarted up – have they moved their meetings to Dortmund, or just written them off for the year? That’s pretty calamitious for the jumpers, given the 2m hurdle series at the course. As if there aren’t few enough such contests over there already!

Unfortunately Jeremy, as Dortmund doesn’t have any obstacles, Germany will be without any jumps racing until Bremen on Good Friday I think. As for Neuss, well, from what I hear, it should be up and running again this time next year at the earliest, and the renovation is costing about 6 million Euros, including what some are saying will be the best grandstand in Germany. Their meetings for this winter have all been shelved.
With no jumps racing in the winter in Germany, you might see some of our horses a bit more in the UK over the coming months. I’ll be discussing plans with Christian on Saturday, but I guess we’ll be doing our usual tour of the smaller Midlands and southern tracks, with a couple of big race days thrown in.
