2 late entries for the German Derby on Sunday, July, 6th, from abroad:
Geoffrey Chaucer (seeded #5)
Pinzolo (seeded #9).Buzzword succeed in an average-generation some years ago. Brown Panther failed as favourite due to a bad ride on heavy going.
How will G.C. and P. do next Sunday?
July 1, 2014 at 14:03 #484442parlo; I met a lovely lady at Newmarket on Friday who breeds horses in Germany. Her name was Birgit and one of her horses is called ‘It’s Gino’. Do you know her? We had a lovely chat about horses and German horses in particular; she even remembered Fieppes Shuffle
July 1, 2014 at 14:30 #484444Sorry, I don’t know her personally. But
It’s Gino
, an unlucky Arc-third, is the revelation of sires in GER this season. What will he do with better-quality-mares?
July 1, 2014 at 16:44 #484452Crikey; I hadn’t realised the horse had been third in the Arc [my German not being very good and her English wasn’t helped by the loud background music in the pub]. They’d just been to see Frankel. We spent most of the time talking about Danedream and Fieppes Shuffle, but her knowledge of bloodlines was astounding.
July 1, 2014 at 18:53 #484456We are going to leave the thread-theme, but:
It’s Gino
was betrayed in the Arc! He was 3rd indeed in Zarkava’s Arc and the photo showed him in front of Soldier of Fortune, but the Longchamp-Stewards called it a dead-heat:

July 2, 2014 at 09:42 #484490So the late entries prevent horses already entered from running if they have a higher rating? Seems unfair.
July 2, 2014 at 11:57 #484497Well, which version of elimination-rules is "fair"?
Those horses eliminated will get back their last stake (1,750 €) and the horses supplemented have to pay stakes of 10 % of the total prize-money = 65,000 € instead of 7,500 €.
In some 145 renewals there has never ever been a German Derby-winner who hadn’t won at least a single race before the Derby and I can’t remember a winner with an official rating below 106 (BHB) in at least recent 20 years.
The German Derby always has difficulties to keep its "G1"-level in International competition. So it’s good for the race to have entries with proven high ratings – thus horses from abroad are welcomed.
July 3, 2014 at 07:05 #484540I’ve backed Sea the Moon at 150s for The Arc so hopeful of a big run.

Since those rules had been introduced in 1979 the winner with the highest No. was 17 (Laroche). But there has been a 2nd placed with No. 20 and a 3rd placed with No. 19 aswell in that period.
July 6, 2014 at 11:12 #484877I’m not having a bet but if I was I’d risk an ew on the filly.
July 6, 2014 at 12:05 #484880Well, that would end a losing run for famous Röttgen Stud in the German Derby beginning after its Uomo won in 1959!
IMO a filly among the first 3 in the Derby is most often an indication of a sub-standard generation.
July 6, 2014 at 12:08 #484881Well, I don’t want that to be the case, certainly not with one of my beloved Sea the Stars progeny running!
July 6, 2014 at 15:29 #484894No worries about that then. Wish at least one racing radio had’ve had the race on though
July 6, 2014 at 15:35 #484895Cue the nonsense.
July 6, 2014 at 15:38 #484896Freak!
