Apracing, re the “yard full of geldings” quote, wasn’t it George Colling who said it?

You could be right – perhaps Todd just agreed with him. I’m old enough to remember Todd, but ………

"Give me a yard full of geldings and I will have the bookies screaming for mercy!"

Jack Colling, trainer of 1953 Oaks winner Ambiguity, and predecessor of Major Dick Hern at West Isley. :D

    Seabird,

I don’t really think that Epsom is any different to any other track when it comes to horses getting injured.

JohnJ, I think it is the generally accepted view that galloping downhill is a severe test of a young horses legs, whether it be Epsom, Brighton, Lingfield or going into the dip on the Rowley Mile. This is accentuated when the ground is firm as it often is at Epsom in June.

Genarally accepted by who? As pointed out, there has only been two fatalities in recent runnings of the Derby. The one in 02, was caused by a heart attack rather than the horse breaking down.

I think somebody posted an excellent post last year in relation to the merits of the Derby being run at Epsom, it could have been Galejade
