The Mark Gillard-trained Ganymede perished in a final-flight fall at Newton Abbot this afternoon.
The grey 7yo Daylami gelding was having his ninth run for the Dorset handler, having previously been guided to three Polytrack victories (a handicap and two Banded contests) from 1m4f-2m by Laura and Ian Mongan.
Rest in peace, Ganymede.

August 5, 2008 at 15:51 #176186This was terribly sad, I did not realise he had died. What happened ? I saw him collapse just before the post . ATR did not mention anything as to his welfare at the time. So sorry to the connections
August 5, 2008 at 17:09 #176202No idea I’m afraid, PeepingFawn – I haven’t seen the race yet, and the Post‘s comments in running read more like he had died in the immediate aftermath of his final flight fall rather than closer to the post. Very sad either way, for sure.

August 5, 2008 at 21:18 #176224Loosing Ganymeade was like loosing a friend to me, his owner Kay lives not far from me and we have become friends through our love of racing… she is heartbroken… here are 2 messages she left for me:
Thanks Kaz – it was awful – right at the last fence and he got up and ran on on 3 legs…it was just one of those tragic accidents that no-one can foresee…Ganymede jumped left to avoid a horse that had already fallen…he sort of crumpled on landing and then another horse jumped straight into the back of him – it was no-ones fault – everyone is gutted…very sad day…xx
Hi Karen,
Thank you for your message,
It was the first time that I had lost a horse on the course – it felt like someone had punched me in the stomach…the worst of it was that it was at the last hurdle and as you know it is a very short run-in at Newton Abbot…there was already a faller and Ganymede jumped left to avoid it straight into the path of Colin Bolger’s horse and Colin had no way of avoiding him…Ganymede was sort of knocked over by Colin’s horse but not a full on fall and my first thoughts were that Tommy had been unseated – then I realized that Ganymede was coming towards me on 3 legs…poor boy…it was truly awful…he collapsed at the finishing line then got up and it was as if he was trying to get to where we were
– it was strange – he ended up at our feet under the running rail. But all credit to the vets etc – they were there really quickly and he didn’t suffer – he was still going on adrenalin. It was no-one’s fault just a freak accident…everyone was really gutted.Hope to see you soon,
K xx
RIP Ganymeade a true warrior until the end…such a beautiful boy
August 12, 2008 at 09:06 #176769I was working at the second last that day and managed to get a wonderful photo of him before he galloped to the final flight. It was a freaky accident involving 3 horses.
August 12, 2008 at 13:20 #176797Always sad when any horse dies-but inevitable that some will
August 13, 2008 at 16:27 #176903This is very sad news, especially as Ganymede was a horse that I had followed throughout his racing career. It took him a very long time to win a race, but he eventually won three and was a real favourite of mine.
My deepest sympathies go out to all his connections, especially his owner – and I hope that you will pass these on to Kay, racinggirluk. Many thanks !
R.I.P. Ganymede – you deserve to old fella – and thanks for the memories.
