I’m not sure how many on here are from Ireland or follow Gaelic games but the season properly gets underway this week and i’m hoping there are a few money making opportunities over the coming weeks.

To start off with my banker of the weekend is Tyrone to beat Down (8/15) and Kildare to beat Donegal (10/11).

Tyrone have taken things serious from the start, pulling the college players from their college side and including them in pre season tournament(Mc Kenna cup) which they won easily, the new young lads will be aiming to keep making their presence felt and the likes of the returning Sean Cavanagh and Harte and O’Neill should help settle any nerves and should overcome a Down side that relies too heavily on 2 or 3 players mainly Gordon, laverty and Benny.

Kildare also won their pre season tournament, dispatching of Dublin after taking it to extra time last week after trailing for the majority of the game, the ever reliable Johnny Doyle was top drawer last week and can always be relied upon as well as the likes of Hugh Mc Grillen and Emmett Bolton. Tomas o connor seems to have continued being a menace around the square ( a giant of a menace) and the mercurial Seanie Johnson is set to line up and is as tricky as any corner forward.
Donegal for their part will field a strong team on paper but none of the big guns were involved at all in the Mc Kenna cup and from what i hear the league is being used almost as a training exercise to get up to pace and with the gameplan they use nothing but 100 percent fitness will work so they could be in trouble for the 1st 2 or 3 games.

A few other teams that might interest me are Cavan at 11/8 who have a lot of talented youngsters coming through and appear to finally have a structured gameplan under their new manager against an Antrim team that is quite regularly a ticking timebomb in terms of players egos and if Cavan go ahead early could win well. I was also going to include Galway to beat Derry as a banker as the Derry camp are already fighting amongst themselves  but Galway have a lot of injuries including Bradshaw,Conroy and young Tom Flynn who is going to be a top drawer midfielder in the next few years and though i do fancy them to still win with the brilliant Michael Meehan appearing to finally have overcome his injury nightmares the price of 4/6 is short enough for me to swerve for the moment at least.

    50 double Kildare 10/11 Tyrone 1/2 PP
Tyrone can be got at 8/15 elsewhere but the double works out best on PP

    Not a bad start.

I’ve decided to give Cavan a chance after hearing David Givney is available to play, himself and Gearoid Mc Kiernan should provide the ammo for Martin Dunne to do the damage.

Well done Fran, a tidy double!

Dublin were impressive yesterday but it is crazy that they should have 5 out of 7 games at home :?

As a Wexford man I hope they can make a push fro promotion again, it will be interesting to see how Aidan O’brien gets on at the helm.

The Wexford hurlers are currently level with a Kilkenny second string in the Walsh Cup semi final :(

Well the Cavan revolution didn’t get off to a great start anyway

Agree totally with the bias shown towards Dublin as regards fixtures, ridiculous really!

Thought they were impressive yesterday and appear to be playing a more defensive system than other years and will be a match for most this season as some of the intensity in their tackling was scary at times,in saying that Cork did some atrocious shooting yesterday and surely won’t shoot as bad as that again and i’ll watch their game with Kildare with interest, could be very close!

Your hurlers got the job done comfortably enough in the end by the look of the scoreboard and your footballers also sneaked past Longford, a result i think you might be happier with come the end of the campaign because they could cause a surprise or 2 particularly at home.

Monaghan and Mayo probably put in the 2 standout performances of the 1st round ,it appears Fitzmaurice is having a look at some new faces so Kerry won’t be overly bothered but Meath i’m sure would have been hoping to start with a flourish and bounce straight back up to Division 3 and had a pretty strong side out with the notable exception of Graham Reilly.

A lot of tight game’s this week that could go either way, the 1 bet that looks good to me is Dublin at 11/10 with Ladbrokes to beat Kerry.

Normally i wouldn’t dream of backing against Kerry in Kerry but Gooch,Declan o Sullivan,Paul Galvin and Eoin Brosnan are among the Kerry players missing and Donaghy might be out too so i can’t see this Kerry side getting any change out of this Dublin defence.

Dublin really did give Kerry 1 hell of a pasting, but rest assured if they come up against each other in the summer it’ll be a hell of a lot closer

1st round of the Hurling starts this weekend and although i haven’t been paying too much heed to the pre season games i see Kilkenny have 8 or 9 of last years All Ireland winning team starting,so i have to have a small bet on them at 6/5.

    Kilkenny €10 6/5

Been a few weeks now since any bet particularly caught my attention but tonights game Dublin v Down does just that,Dublin are one of the most impressive teams all year and Down in my opinion are the worst team in the league and Dublin at 5/6 -4 looks a great price and despite the bad weather i could see this being a Dublin win by 8 points or more.

    Dublin -4 5/6 €20

League semi finals this weekend and although some of the games seem closely matched i think the 2 favourites in the Division 1 semi finals should prevail, Dublin and Kerry have been the 2 standout teams of the year so far and will hopefully do the business.

I’m taking a chance on Meath at 13/10 this evening against Monaghan,Meath have improved throughout the year and if Brian Menton can handle mc manus and Meath get enough ball into the forwards 13/10 could look big as Meath have some decent scoring forwards.

    Meath 13/10 Boylesports €20

I was down at the under 21 semi final double header and was very impressed with Cork. Galway beat a Kildare side that kicked a ridiculous amount of wides and Cork won’t do the same today and i expect them to win and win quite easily so with the handicap -1 i’m happy to get on it. The only thing keeping me from going mad on Cork is that it’s underage level and form can change quite quickly.

    Cork -1 €20 6/5 pp

    + €121.65

Did you see the weekend’s action Fran?

I think Mayo were flattered by their wide margin victory over Galway. They struggled in the second half with 2 extra men against a pretty chronic Galway performance. Unless Mayo improve significantly, I think I’ll be backing the first half decent team they face to beat them. They’ll probably come through Connaught unscathed before facing tougher tests. 8/1 for Sam looks short particularly as they tend to fill the underpants come September!

Sorry THM,i’ve been busy with work so haven’t got on here as much as i’d have liked,i myself can’t see mayo going all the way,Aidan o Shea is playing well in centrefield but i don’t rate the brother and up front i don’t think they’re much outside of 0′ Connor and Moran (who isn’t exactly a prolific scorer).

I’m going down to Croke park today and will be interested to see how Cork do against a young pacey Galway side, i’d expect them to dispatch of Galway quite easily due to their superior size and power and if they change their half back line around a bit with young Cahalane meant to start there i can see them going close this year as the half back line i feel is their weak link as the lack of pace has been exposed so many times in recent years.

In saying that Dublin look the class act of the year so far but have they played their hand too soon?

For what it’s worth i think the winner will come from Munster.

As for today i think all 4 of the favs will win and each could beat the handicap also, but very hard to get 4 up in a handicap accumulator. I might just settle for Tyrone-3 and Cavan -11,rumour is London haven’t even travelled over together for the game and have landed in dribs and drabs, if that is the case and with the difference in performances last week (London hammered and Cavan winning after extra time) they could have a very long day.

Despite earlier knocking Mayo, it wouldn’t surprise me if they beat Donegal. The hunger doesn’t look the same up there this season, and Mayo have a point to prove. That being said, I’m surprised Mayo are 4/6, looks skimpy.

I rarely bet on GAA but I’m tempted by Monaghan at 2/1 to beat Tyrone. It should be a very tight game and on that basis alone they look overpriced.

Mayo have proved me wrong so far this season, and I really hope they go on to complete what has been a great year for them. It was great to see them beat the Ulster teams and hopefully they’ll take the Dubs down a peg now too :)

I’ve been surprised by Mayos progress myself, they’re like a new side, none of the fragility of old Mayo teams and i hope they go on to lift Sam. Aidan O’ Shea in the 1st half against Donegal was one of the performances where you go ‘i was there’.

I’ve been given a team in the Cork Championship this evening who i’ve been told are well overpriced at 10/11, Carragaline apparently have got some key players back from injury and abroad in recent weeks whereas their opponents Kinsale are in the opposite position yet the betting hasn’t factored this into their pricing, it’s not a guaranteed win but every bit of info’s helpful.

I had a massive long post typed out about this weekends G.A.A and some thoughts on the season ahead and somehow ended up closing the page and losing all  so i’m going to keep it short now. I’m starting from scratch again this year. This weekends double Tyrone -3 4/5 and Roscommon -5 at 4/6 €10.
