18 entered for Sunday’s race, and no Lush Lashes, even though Jim Bolger said after the Coronation that the Oaks would be her next race.
Is her non-appearance due to a training setback, JB’s re-consideration that the Nassau distance is actually LL’s optimum, or is it simply due to the error of not having entered her in the first place? Anyone know what the supplementary fee was for this race?
Re Sunday’s runners, I think Katiyra (who really didn’t handle Epsom) will take all the beating. But because I’d like to see Dalakhani get a G1 this season I’m rooting for Chinese White and Moonstone.
Although Mad About You’s second in the Pretty Polly was a good effort, I doubt that she will get the extra two furlongs. Gagnoa’s second to Zarkava in the French Oaks was good form, and she will most likely improve for the extra distance. It will be interesting to see whether Johnny Murtagh goes for Gagnoa or Moonstone.

Agree, Oxx had always said from the start of the season that this was his horse for this year, and she was the only one to figure at epsom from a prominent ride. I think she was chasing murtagh on adored which proved to be a mistake. Lush Lashes and Chinese White paid the price for being at the front, and I thought it was good that Katiyra finished where she did, as would have thought she was a speedier sort.
Hard to see her being beaten on sunday.

Does that make her an odds-on chance in your book, then, Bulwark?
July 9, 2008 at 13:50 #172509Well to be fair Gus Ive not been great with my bankers this season (better with the e/ws), but on the balance of her last two runs, she should really win I think and would look capable of more than the rest. I guess I would think she should be an odds on shot, but then I never back odds on.
July 10, 2008 at 14:12 #172675Excuse me, whilst I admit myself into the nearest mental clinic.
I have taken great interest to Aidan O’Brien’s second/third string filly Gentle On My Mind. After viewing and reviewing her debut race I am quite keen to see how she fares on the more galloping Curragh track and with natural improvement.
She left Love To Dance (half to Dylan Thomas) and Zaziyra dead and buried in the style of a very classy horse. I was most impressed.
Have to appreciate her pedigree, Sadler’s Wells x Darshaan mare from the family of Irish Oaks winner Ebadiyla.
I’ll play. 16/1 is good-ish. Not tantalising but the field essentially stops at Adored 20/1. The rest are making up numbers.
July 12, 2008 at 14:36 #172964There’s a big tip going around locally for John Oxx’s filly, but reviewing the Oaks I acknowledge that she didn’t enjoy the track but still think Moonstone will confirm the form as she was staying on the best. At 2/1 she’s no bargain, but I won’t be rushing to oppose her. Obviously the French filly has a chance but I don’t think the ground will be soft enough to inconvenience anything here. I pass on a fancy for Nanotech in the sprint, 5th last year as a raw 3yo, looks overpriced to me at 12/1.
July 12, 2008 at 14:56 #172967What chance Moonstone going for the Leger if she wins tomorrow? Might make the 33’s look big.
July 12, 2008 at 18:41 #172984Remembering Soldier Of Fortune last year.
Would think Moonstone has a better chance of appearing in the Ledger if she does not win tomorrow.
If she wins then may be the Vermaille could be the route.

Value Is EverythingJuly 12, 2008 at 22:49 #173010Murtagh said that Moonstone was the one to beat. That she had improved since the English oaks! However Heffernan has been put up on the French one and she is awfully good. He is O’Brien’s jockey in form.Oxx’s yard has been somewhat out of form and Welds have been coming up a dollar short this year.I could see Aidan having first and another placed .

Quite a tricky little Oaks this when looking into it closly. Fabre has a runner here in Gagnoa but I do think she is quite short at 5.5 and will be laying because I really don’t think she has a turn of foot in final 2 furlongs to really put to bed a Group 1 over 12f. When it comes to Moonstone you only got to take a look at the jockey booking in Murtagh and feel good about the horses chances but I thought at Epsom she ran a game race at 25-1 with a big improvement from her run behind Lush Lashes where she was abit inexperienced and maybe suprised the yard a touch with that effort at Epsom and could of come on leaps and bounds yet again so I’ll be having a win bet at 3.2. If there is an outside chance here then I would have to give it to Mad About You who’s a really tough cookie that stepped up in trip last time out in the Pretty Polly and ran a solid race coming 2nd and beat by just over 1 length but leaving the quallity Anna Pavlova some 4 lengths back. I think the step up further in trip to 12f could be the making of Mad About You and have an each way bet at 7-1.
July 13, 2008 at 05:52 #173039Going for Mad About You here with Gagnoa to push her close. Reasons outlined in my lays and plays thread and I hate repeating myself.
July 13, 2008 at 14:06 #173089Moonstone’s chance depends on the pace. A slow pace and she’ll get outpaced late on, a good pace and she’ll be staying on best. Would expect Coolmoore to make sure it is a strongly run contest.
Katiyra can be expected to improve as can Gagnoa. My vote goes with Katiyra.
