"They’re not messin’ about here"
and
"and as they settle down to battle it out"
and
"photow, that ‘s one for the judge!"

January 29, 2008 at 22:15 #138793Proof positive that some people are completely unsackable, the Warwick race commentator Barry Jones received the following tribute from his employers, as reported in the Australian Telegraph;
“The 25-year caller from Dalby, who makes George W look eloquent, was defended bravely yesterday by the club’s secretary Jane Grieve, who said: “We try to have fun up here and when Barry muffs a race we all laugh and still love him”.

January 29, 2008 at 23:41 #138825I’m always a fan of those commentators who just can’t quite keep their emotions in check. Try this for size:

This is the Group 1 Prime Ministers Cup at Veliefendi in Istanbul, and no less jockey that Kieren Fallon is on the inside in the yellow colours. Now unless you’re Turkish, you might not understand what the commentator is saying here, but I think he might well have needed a lie down afterwards!! I tell you, he gives this EVERYTHING!!
January 30, 2008 at 06:28 #138852but I like a bit of personality myself.
Spot on and that brings us on to one of our favourites on this forum.
I made a rare venture into the world of AW weather racing at Wolverhampton yesterday – I’ve nicknamed the day "Lone Wolves" – in all my years of racegoing I have never been to a meeting with fewer punters (43 in the main stand by the third race) and so little atmosphere.
The only saving grace was Tommo doing the call, so there was always the opportunity for some light relief.
Yesterday I played an imaginary spread bet on the number of times he would begin a line with "OK". Like "OK , they’re going down" or "OK here’s the betting".
Sad I know, but at a dull afternoon in Wolverhampton it helps break the monotony.
With seven races I set the spread at 21-23. just missed out as the score came in at 20.
I thought of another "Tommo spread" mid-afternoon, that is the number of times he half laughs at one of his "funnies".
Any other ideas fror some fun spreads?
Much as Thommo annoys me with his frivolities and cliches, he does make a race fun with his informal, chatty style. i’d rather have him than Scargill.

That even beats John Hunt on one of his excitable days
Is it my imagination or has John Hunt calmed down a bit now?I wonder if the commentator had an investment in the race?
January 30, 2008 at 12:30 #138920By his own admission he’s calmed down appreciably recently, Paul, and has been pretty honest about the sonic terrorism he visited upon racegoers in his earlier years. He’s a good man.
Exhibit A – you’ll recall that you and I were standing right in front of his commentary box at Warwick on New Year’s Eve, yet left the venue without our ears ringing.

Fair points Jeremy, I also have to say his commentary at Leicester yesterday was probably the best all round performance I have heard in many a long time. He got the tone absolutely spot on.
January 31, 2008 at 11:37 #139185John Hunt has developed into a very good race caller.
January 31, 2008 at 23:41 #139355Yet tucked away on Radio 5 with a bunch of assorted clowns.
On primetime BBC, Jim McGrath.
They never get it right on the BBC do they?
February 1, 2008 at 03:08 #139373I don’t see what the problem is with JM, he was number 6 greyhound caller in Melbourne before trekking to England.
