I’d be interested to know how many horses are currently running short of a gallop or two as a result of the gallops at home being frozen. Has anyone spotted a trend to recent results to indicate particular trainers have been advantaged/disadvantaged by the cold snap?
December 6, 2010 at 19:08 #331401I’d be interested to know too Tuffers – would make the next month or so a heck of a lot easier punting wise.
I know of at least one P2P trainer who’s been out in the tractor on the gallops at 2:30am in the morning such is his dedication to the cause

Phillip Hobbs said at the weekend that he’s been able to operate as normal over the last couple of weeks; he’s had no snow to deal with and his polytrack gallop has been usable throughout.
December 6, 2010 at 19:30 #331405…all of which sounds entirely plausible, given how close to the coast and its (potentially) warmer influences his Withycombe base is. He has a Polytrack gallop as well, but that’s not been deployed to the exclusion of all else as yet.

December 7, 2010 at 00:11 #331430Eoin Doyles’ diary in today’s Post shows how this will affect the small guys more. He had no gallops for several days and was even without a horse walker for a period. He couldn’t even get out of the yard to get groceries and his feed delivery didn’t come when it should. Sounds like a nightmare. Well worth keeping a race to race eye on stable form after a period like this.
December 10, 2010 at 17:15 #331946One trainer who may have been assisted by the cold snap is Mark Brisbourne. He’d had a shocking year up to the end of November but this month he’s had six winners and two seconds from 12 runners (including a double so far today).
December 20, 2010 at 20:56 #333362Tom Dascombe is another trainer who has put a poor season behind him since the start of the cold snap.
It would be interesting to make a list of those trainers with a much worse than average season this year and follow their runners closely over the winter. It’s possible that a number of them have had bugs in the yard which have finally been wiped out by Mother Nature.
December 21, 2010 at 21:04 #333493Agreed. Think it might just need a new Ice Age to sort out whatever’s been ailing the string of my Formby-based namesake for so long, though…

Armageddon, most likely!
December 29, 2010 at 15:55 #334189Tom Dascombe has 8 winners from 12 runners in December now…
December 29, 2010 at 16:17 #334191…and John Ryan is 3 from 5 in December after a poor season.
December 29, 2010 at 17:19 #334199Someone told me that Tom Dascombe was on holiday. That might explain it….
January 10, 2011 at 19:42 #335348Tom Dascombe and Mark Brisbourne still banging in the winners.
Dascombe 9 winners from 20 runners since the start of December and Brisbourne 11 from 36 over the same period.
Are there any other trainers I’ve missed who have managed to turn round an awful 2010?
February 21, 2011 at 19:58 #341621Mark Brisbourne’s stable are still bang in form despite having precious little ammunition. He’s managed a 25% strike rate in both January and February and unlike his son, Ben, his daughter, Becky, seems to be a real asset in the saddle. She’s ridden 3 winners from just 6 rides.
September 19, 2011 at 17:49 #371373Following my post on another thread, I thought I’d pick up this thread again as following the Mark Brisbourne stable this year would have produced a handsome return. Backing every one of his runners blind this year would have produced a profit of over £100 to the £1 stake.
I thought it would be interesting to make a list of out of form trainers this year to see if they show a good profit once whatever is ailing the stable is shown to be behind them.
The obvious candidate for such a list this year is Clive Brittain who’s had an absolute shocker with his runners in April to July inclusive producing just 4 winners from 144 runners. He seems to be coming out of the lean period though with 4 winners in the last week and I’ll be looking to follow his horses for the rest of the year.
September 19, 2011 at 22:49 #371395Despite previous threads from me about how bad the form is of Mark Johnstons yard ;
Last 14 days
75 runners12 winners
12 seconds
6 thirds.Level stakes profit to £1 stake, £17.50
February 3, 2012 at 19:21 #389659In view of the current cold snap, I thought I would resurrect this thread. It might be worth making a list of trainers who have been under a cloud so far this winter as this spell may kill off any virus that has been hanging round.
Mark Brisbourne (featured on here previously) has already said that his stable had a virus throughout December and his horses are just coming right.
Any others for the list?
