Hurricane Fly appears to be favourite for this. But I agree with Timeform he’s worth opposing at 3 and quarter miles and an unfamiliar track and time of year. They like Zarkander but they seem rather dismissive of the French horses. Is there a common rating scale that can be used to compare them all?

On the official French website, the handicap ratings are shown for all the runners – not sure how the French come up with the rating for overseas runners, whether it’s based solely on their form in France or a French interpretation of their overall form.

But those ratings have Hurricane Fly on 840 (i.e. 84kgs), Zarkandar on 805, Un Temps Pour Tout on 795 and Ballynagour on 790 as the top four. The highest rated French trained runner is Lamego on 725 and his last win was in a handicap hurdle back in March 2012, since when he’s lost 31 straight. So even the French think their horses have very little chance.

Massive race from Un Temps Pour Tout. He took the lead early on, set a steady pace to the race, and landed the biggest win of his career as yet.
Thousand Stars is second and never is as good as when he runs at Auteuil.
