I see that Bluesq have a market up on the second leg of the triple crown – halfwaytoheaven etc. any views on this race?
Called up for a price on Rachel Alexandra and was quoted 4/6, they’ve since gone 4/5 which still isn’t enough to tempt me. Interesting contender (if she goes) now she’s been sold to Jess Jackson and been transfered to Steve Asmussen. Would be a tough decision for Calvin Borel to make – Oaks winner or Derby winner? That said from what I’ve heard he might not have any choice to make with Jackson prefering to use Albarado or Bridgmohan on her.
Hull’s another that interests me having missed the KY Derby and is being lined up for this one
Anyone else any thoughts?
May 7, 2009 at 23:48 #226216I think Rachel Alexandra may still miss this race despite transfering stables. It had been firmly the plan not to take the boys on just yet……
Mine That Bird seems a little short to me and I’m a little suprised that there isnt a price for Fresian Fire.
The right words are coming out of the Larry Jones stable to give me the impression he’ll be ‘match fit’ for the Preakness and I’ve had him down as one of the top contenders for the Preakness since his Louisiana Derby win.
It’s all a case of ‘what if’ regarding the Derby and Friesian Fire what with Papa Clem finishing 4th in a head bob but he’d have a fantastic chance here if he does appear.
Personally, I dont want Pioneer of the Nile to run in this. I’d be happier for him to wait until the Belmont to reappear and I think the extra couple of weeks off will do him the world of good.
At this early stage, of the non-Derby entries Big Drama stands out. Hull is a nice pick too, IS!
May 8, 2009 at 00:41 #226226I think Pioneerof The Nile will run and win. Wish Rachel Alexandra would still run against fillies at this point of the season – take the colts later on and beat them. Don’t think this will happen in the Preakness. One thing I’m pretty sure of (oh,dear, going out on a limb) is that Mine That Bird won’t win the Preakness.
May 8, 2009 at 00:44 #226229Meant to add: all being well with him by then, I think Friesan Fire has a great chance in the Belmont.
May 8, 2009 at 00:49 #226232I thought I read that Friesan Fire is on the sidelines??? I’ll see if I can find it.
May 8, 2009 at 00:55 #226235Found an updated story.
Apologies for my lack of basic knowledge of horse anatomy. I thought pulling off part of your hoof would put you out of a race 3 weeks later.
Onehorse not quoted for the race by Blue Square is Friesan Fire, but the colt remained a likely runner in the race according to his trainer Larry Jones.
Friesan Fire had been sent off the 38-10 favourite for the Kentucky Derby and disappointed in trailing home 18th of the 19 runners but it subsequently emerged that he had ripped off part of his foot early in the race.
He is undergoing treatment on the injury and Jones said: "It’s healing really fast and we feel like we have a really good shot and we can make it."
May 8, 2009 at 23:44 #226431Big news just coming out of America, Rachel Alexandra runs with Borel on board
May 12, 2009 at 02:22 #227057Only just seen this fillies run in the Kentucky Oaks. For those who haven’t seen it, or her other races she’s worth searching on youtube.
Looks like the plot to prevent her running has been quashed and she’s probably going to be supplemented. She looks a monster and I think her time in the Oaks stands up well against previous winners despite her not even being in a race.
May 12, 2009 at 02:35 #227060She’ll win Aragorn.
She’s by far the class horse in the race.
She could be the Curlin/Big Brown of the year with ease

May 15, 2009 at 01:14 #227716Heres the declarations!
1. Big Drama (John Velazquez) 10-1
2. Mine That Bird (Mike Smith) 6-1
3. Musket Man (Eibar Coa) 8-1
4. Luv Gov (Jamie Theriot) 50-1
5. Friesan Fire (Gabriel Saez) 6-1
6. Terrain (Jeremy Rose) 30-1
7. Papa Clem (Rafael Bejarano) 12-1
8. General Quarters (Julien Leparoux) 20-1
9. Flying Private (Alan Garcia) 50-1
10. Pioneerof The Nile (Garrett Gomez) 5-1
11. Take The Points (Edgar Prado) 30-1
12. Tone It Down (Kent Desormeaux) 50-1
13. Rachel Alexandra (Calvin Borel) 8-5fMay 16, 2009 at 14:08 #228028Here we go! It’s Preakness day!
Rachel Alexandra is value everywhere in the UK with Ladbrokes offering an astounding price of 2/1. Fresian Fire is 10/1 in place with Pioneer of the Nile standing tall at 4/1 across the board.
A strong contrast to the USA pools. Early betting put Rachel Alexandra as the 3/2 favourite with POTN and Mine That Bird 7/1 joint 2nd favourites.
I’ve taken the option to stick to my Derby fancies for this race. POTN could drift to anywhere near 7/1 over here later tonight and that’s a price I can’t turn down for such a good horse. The 10/1 for Freisian Fire is remarkable too.
I’ll stick to my guns and say that Big Drama is the best of the non-Derby entries. If you want a fresh horse who hasnt run in the Derby then this is the one for you. However, Gomez hadnt asked POTN for an effort last time out before Mine That Bird came zooming round on the rail and I dont think Gomez will get caught out like that again. If Gomez keeps his cards close to his chest and sticks with the leaders on the turn he will win.
POTN has a fantastic racing spirit but just does enough everytime. He needs horses next to him to produce an effort. Look back at the Derby replay and you’ll see that POTN once again produced one of those ‘just does enough’ efforts to hold off Papa Clem and Musket Man.
Friesian Fire ran no race in the Derby as the 38/10 favourite. If he gets a clean run we could be on for a fantastic finish between POTN and FF. Possibly the finish we were denied of in the Derby by an amazing rail run by Borel.
Come 11:20 tonight I could very well be kicking myself for not backing Rachel Alexandra……but its POTN and FF for me again with Rachel and Big Drama in the exactas.
And to top that all off, I’ve taking a sneaky AP bet of 10/1 on Pioneer of the Nile winning the Breeders Cup Classic. I spent all morning trying to get a price! It’s his home track and if he runs well today that could half in price
May 16, 2009 at 14:48 #228038The Filly is the best horse in the race, she also has the potential to bounce to the moon.
I’ll be betting Rachel Alexandra and Big Drama at a nice price
May 16, 2009 at 22:53 #228116The two I like are Pioneer Of The Nile and Musket Man.
POTN had to be the best horse at Churchill given he closely stalked the strong pace (for the sticky slop) and still held on to second. Musket Man was similar and looks very straightforward and at almost 14/1 on exchanges thats a bet as thats too big, I think.
Without Borel and with everyone understanding his modus operandi Mine That Bird is very vulnerable.
Rachel Alexandra looks stunning but has sauntered home from non top class fillies. I worry for her against the best of the males and I think she will have to totally outclass them to win. Thats possible but on balance I am going to back Musket Man and the Pioneer and reverese the forecast also.May 16, 2009 at 23:58 #228125At home watching eurovison which is freaky as hell, Graham Norton being a very dry and not that camp in his humour, abit like Sir Terry, though god help us when he has had a few Vodkas, Sir Terry was notoroous for getting ratted and bitchy by the time the voting ended…
General Quarters is my pick each way, he is better value than the coolmore coward…
Rachel will find she is no longer a red bellied Piranaha in a tank of goldfish, now she takes on the boys will see if she like a butch lesbian in pub brawl or is she camp queen in at thrash rock convention..
The tracks hopefully will resemble a racetrack and less like a beach thats just been used for speedway.
Ps what the hell was the russain girl wearing, if dads a billonare surely he can afford too buy the girl a dress and signing lessions…..

Having been left thoroughly traumatised by the trousers of the German Eurovision entry, I’ll reverse Rachel Alexandra and Friesan Fire and hope for the best (the former’s Oaks performance was of Secretariat proportions and clearly marks her out as the best horse in the race, but a wide draw may be problematic and Friesan Fire should get the perfect trip).
May 17, 2009 at 00:50 #228130Had a small win bet on Friesan Fire, just draw a line through his Derby effort.
