am thoroughly enjoying my Eurovision night, and would be even happier if I could get to watch this race live, but can’t; please someone put up the result as soon as possible..just hope the filly comes back in one piece…..
May 17, 2009 at 02:33 #228143The super filly wins!
However, the Belmont is Mine That Bird’s for the taking. He was closing all the time right up to the wire. He didnt get the rail either.
Great front running performance from Rachel
May 17, 2009 at 02:39 #228146Amazing! would love to see it….was reading about Mine that Bird and his trainer in the Independant this morning as well…..
May 17, 2009 at 02:54 #228148Screamed Mine That Bird home – what a great little horse that is! Intimidated, prevented from the inner, checked, blocked and blinded, he still got to within half a length with that amazing late run.
Reminscent of The Brave’s Derby, tonight.
Its been a moribund season over here so far, but this years American Triple Crown is the best sport I’ve seen in years. Any sport.
May 17, 2009 at 03:00 #228150Thank goodness they didn’t stop the filly from running, though..that would have been so unsporting. Was Mine that Bird wearing that wierd cowboy type bridle tonight as well? They described him in the Independent as a gelding; was that a mistake?
May 17, 2009 at 03:01 #228152I have to say, as much as I rate Smith he shouldve waited and waited and waited.
On the turn the gap on the rail finally opened but it was too late. He’d already taken the dodge route through a wall of horses in the centre.
What a rivalry we have on our hands now though! Mine That Bird, a 50/1 winner of the Derby, proved that was no fluke! The American media will build this up as the rivalry of the decade and rightly so.
POTN and Friesian Fire finished 11th and 10th. Disappointed with that. POTN ran no race and I’d expect Baffert will take a detour and divert the Belmont. Friesian Fire similarly.
Rachel Alexandra went off 5/2 in places over here – reminiscent of the drift on Zarkava on Arc day. There was a general feeling that she wouldnt win this just because she’s a filly. I didnt back her – but I wish I did!
What a days racing we’ve had today. A great advert for the sport.

No mistake Moehat – he’s the first gelding since Funny Cide to win the Derby.
Two words – GO RACHEL!!!!!!!!!
May 17, 2009 at 03:07 #228155Boooooooooooooom… Borel almost wired ’em
May 17, 2009 at 14:22 #228199At last, managed to see the race on utube [thank goodness American racing is still on there]….memories of the Sunday Silence, Easy Goer years that first got me interested in American racing..no loser in my book; Mine that Bird is a superstar and, being a gelding we’re going to see him for years. Awesome.
May 17, 2009 at 14:55 #228208Yeeeeeeeeeeeee hahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that was a race and a half !!!!
Can’t add much to what has been said apart from R.A had a 5 pound allowance remember and Calvin Borel is the best jocky in the world. I love that guy.
May 17, 2009 at 17:51 #228241SHE DID IT… SHE BEAT THE BOYS!!!
13 Rachel Alexandra
(Calvin Borel) – $5.60 $4.60 $3.60
2 Mine That Bird ———————————– $6.60 $4.80
3 Musket Man ———————————————- $5.00It was a great day for racing in the US…
the filly won and they all came home safe!
The level of interest in our great sport is up,
and forpositive
reasons for a change.

Imagine if someone somehow got Presvis and Mine That Bird into the same race. The final 2 furlongs would be immense. Both have a ridiculous turn of foot
Santa Anita Polytrack anyone?
May 19, 2009 at 00:28 #228561Rachel looks like a colt. She had some real competition and she dispatched them, bring on Zenyatta, we will have a real horse race.
The filly is the top three yearold in the US at the moment bar non.
Mind That Bird ran a great race, unlike so many of the field, Musket Man was a solid third which helps keep the form from Kentucky honest.
