Dettori was given a sycophantic interview by the Alex and Josh double act on SSR’s coverage of the Racing League from Southwell.

At one point, Dettori said “I promised I would be here – and here I am” and Alex swooned like a fan girl.

Pity he could not keep his word with Listowel as well. Alex and Josh forgot to mention that.

I know I’ve said this before, but honestly, if I had to watch/listen to this stuff, I would find it impossible to continue to follow racing.

    It sounds beyond awful.

Thank goodness for betting apps where you can just turn on (muted) pictures at post time, watch the race, then switch off again.

Dettori rode in the 5f handicap and set off like it was a 2f race. Afterwards, Alex and Josh had to admit the fast early pace “set it up for the closing pack”.

Of course, there was no mention of it being a poorly judged ride by Dettori.

I by and large echo Richard’s point of view on the subject as at September 10, 2023 at 00:01.

I agree with Richard as well. Dettori is undoubtedly box office and his big race record speaks for itself.

But some of his behaviour in recent years has not been impressive. The Listowel incident leaves a bit of a nasty taste in the mouth.

Why couldn’t he have accepted the same fee? Did he really need a fee at all? I could possibly understand Listowel reimbursing his travel costs incurred in getting to a track he does not usually visit – but I am sure a return flight on Ryanair from a London airport to Cork would not cost much!

Maybe it will all be forgotten soon but is the bad publicity really worth the value of what must be a small sum of money to someone with his wealth?

As I said either here or in another thread, he could have ridden for free for the entire year and not had to worry about money. It’s a disgraceful look really.

I’m no PR expert but he could have donated these fees to charity and scored the easiest PR win you can imagine, especially if they were racing charities. ‘Frankie spends his last year in the saddle giving something back to the sport that made him’ reads rather better than ‘greedy millionaire jockey demands appearance fees to ride at provincial Irish tracks’.

In July Frankie parted ways with long-time agent Peter Burrell. Maybe that’s where the confusion came in with the price agreed.

And I see FD has changed his mount in the Leger, which makes a refreshing turnaround headline for us frustrated subs: Arrest Under Frankie.

“If he comes to the Ayr western meeting we’ll need to start with the money buckets ,
    u up for it Big G ? , can’t have Frankie going short …”

Apologies HDLG, I need to keep up with the Frankie thread a bit more.

The only problem with the bucket scheme is I don’t think they have built
one big enough. Maybe a skip, or maybe we could borrow a pair of Chezza’s
trousers, apparently his pockets are as deep as Wookey Hole

Actually on second thoughts, Chezza would probably want a bigger fee
than Dettori, and all in Hobnobs

“borrow a pair of Chezza’s trousers, apparently his pockets are as deep as Wookey Hole”

For cash, it’s a one-way street into Chezza’s pockets – not an exit sign in sight.
