Piggot was half deaf like myself , it does make communication harder …it also gives you the choice to miss hear or ignore certain things …
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
December 18, 2022 at 11:06 #1627222I admire anyone who can turn a negative into a positive.
I believe Piggott also had a speech impediment, though Willie Carson once famously remarked: “You wouldn’t know it when he was on the phone to an owner or trainer, trying to nick someone’s big-race ride.”

Ditto to that.
June 2, 2023 at 16:49 #16499522,000 Guineas, Coronation Cup, Oaks.
What are the chances he will change his mind?
June 2, 2023 at 16:54 #1649956I’m all for bowing out at the top but he’d have to consider it..
You are a long time retired and even a longer time dead so if you are enjoying it carry on as long as possibleGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
June 2, 2023 at 17:03 #1649962He’s back to his absolute best.
The previous 1 1/2 seasons were absolutely atrocious, I thought he was finished but he’s proved me and many others wrong.
Fair play to him.June 2, 2023 at 20:52 #1649996Only just got round to watching to watching today’s Oaks Group ones. He is an absolutely master of his trade, of course he is on some of the best but nevertheless you have to ride them to the line.
The more I know the less I understand.

I was thinking exactly this.
What’s the Italian for: “Why the actual **** am I retiring?”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 3, 2023 at 02:10 #1650081He is the epitome of a confidence rider – the fact that he is retiring (I don’t think he will reverse that decision) may have been the ultimate pressure release for him to just go ahead an enjoy the farewell tour and as such that confidence has returned in spades and that feeling is transferred through to the horses.
It also helps that some good new horses have seemed to appear just in time to coincide with his final year along with some of the older horses coming back strong (Emily Upjohn) and then he has the likes of Inspiral, Chaldean, Kinross, Haskoy and no doubt many others to get on at Royal Ascot.
June 3, 2023 at 07:33 #1650092I can’t say I am bothered about it but Dettori is now 4/1 favourite on the Exchange to win Sports Personality of the Year.
He might have a chance. There is no major football competition or Olympics. No British player is going to win Wimbledon.
His nearest rival is Ben Stokes but England would probably need to win the Ashes for him to win.
June 3, 2023 at 08:02 #1650099If he did win it he will probably be the first to represent the title of actually having a personality.

June 3, 2023 at 08:13 #1650102My father used to say a particular type of person – “white, middle class and angry of Tunbridge Wells – takes the trouble to write in to the BBC to vote on SPOTY and that eliminates people from horrid gambling, animal-exploiting sports like racing.
And indeed Racing doesn’t exactly have a great historical track record in this contest.
Phone voting may have changed the demographic, but not necessarily to racing’s advantage as it might now be: “Woke and angry of Islington,” who thinks racing and betting people should release all horses into the wild (where of course the reality is they will all swiftly perish in a number of unpleasant ways) and we should all join vegan craft workshops instead.
If anyone can buck this historical trend and get both the Torygraph and luvvie Guardian readers voting for him – along with those great unwashed tabloid types, if they’ve got any data left on their mobile phones, that is – it’s Dettori, but not sure I’d bet on it.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 3, 2023 at 08:19 #1650105No, I would not bet on him now. I believe he was 16/1 earlier this week but I missed it.

He did finish third after his Magnificent 7 and McCoy won the award as well, so I am not sure being from racing is that much of a disadvantage.
Hollie Doyle also finished third but that was in lockdown year when a lot of sport was curtailed. I doubt she would have been on the podium in a normal year.
June 3, 2023 at 08:22 #1650106No major men’s football competition. As with the cricket, England’s women would need to win it and even then, the tournament isn’t going to quite capture the public’s imagination like last year’s home Euros because it’s on the other side of the planet with the associated awkward kickoff times.
Looking at the list, there really isn’t a huge amount in his way. There’s the Rugby World Cup but it’s highly unlikely any home nation will win that. There’s the World Athletics and while Dina Asher Smith is good, she will need at least one gold to be in with a shout which is going to be tough.
There’s a couple of other major names nearing the ends of their careers in Mark Cavendish (who is retiring) and Jimmy Anderson who surely can’t keep going that much longer so either of those could make the shortlist.

So basically one winner and a couple of thirds – EVER?
I stand by what I say – manifestly not impossible for a racing personality to win it, but historically a big ask in any given year, statistically.
At least you’ve actually got me interested in BBC SPOTY, for once, CAS – like Eurovision I might now tune in at the death this year for the voting results!
