Frankie to retire after one more season.

What odds will he be part of the ITV Racing team from 2024?

A whole season of the media fawning over him, I bet he’s having wet dreams just thinking about it!

I suppose there was no chance of him just slipping away quietly like Ruby or Dickie.

He has been a quality jock over the years though, that much is undeniable.

Yes, he has MC. But I wish he’d talk just as much as Ryan.

Just the FIVE stories on the RP website – he’s not retiring until the end of next year.

I suppose he’s picked the right slow news day to announce it.

I’d be more than happy to see Frankie replace the likes of Mick Fitzgerald and Luke Harvey for the 2024 flat racing season on ITV Racing. The team have got really tired over the years with Alice Plunkett being wheeled out again for the jumps and Sir Tony McCoy gracing us all with his presence and ‘expert advice’ for the big meetings alongside Mick Fitz fanning his over large ego by referring to him as Champ…yes he was but I never liked his style and that’s my own personal opinion.

I will miss Frankie on the racecourse, many people come racing just to see him. I remember after racing at Newmarket on the July Course sitting having a coffee with friends watching the jockeys going home in their day clothes and trying to see who could name the most obscure ones when out walks Ryan Moore who had won a couple of decent races that day trophys in hand followed out by Frankie who had had an unusual blank day. Ryan walked on with his usual deadpan expression towards the exit with not a single person asking for a selfie or autograph whilst Frankie was surrounded by a throng of selfie and autograph hunters. He stopped, posed for selfies and signed every one of their racecards whilst laughing, smiling and cracking jokes ….guaranteed they’ll all come back to see him again.

Frankie Dettori is a good Ambassador for flat racing and I wish him well in his future retirement … Jac :rose:

No, Ian we are already at seven an counting. Hate to read that same crap about how much his seven-timer had cost the bookies at that time.

Lol Ian..I’ve just visited Racing Post website and Frankie has filled their whole newspage with speculative posts on the day when there was going to be no news to speak of.

I think he might be on the shortlist for PM if he carries on leaking key information in this way.

Glad to have amused you, Triptych.

Chippy, State school-educated northerner that I am, I am consistent only in my dislike of virtually everyone in racing (love racing but, with a few honourable exceptions, loathe virtually everyone in racing) but like you I don’t mind Frankie Dettori.

World-class jockey, great ambassador for the game with a charm that transcends all class boundaries and, most importantly of all, on the one and only occasion I ever met him, he was impeccably polite to me.

Chezza takes as he finds and Dettori’s alright in his book!

Its the loss of him as the larger than life face of horse racing for many of Joe Public that will be most difficult to replace….there really isn’t anyone out there that comes close.

A great big time rider on the world stage although there have been a few more brain fart moments sprinkled in over the last few years, I would imagine that he will get the ITV call up for the big flat meetings rather than being a regular pundit/analyst week in week out.

We still get him for the upcoming flat season, when he returns from his current stint in US and I would imagine to bow out with a 2023 Breeders Cup win (for Johnny G as Chapman calls him) would be a great exclamation point for his career.

Flawed people are more interesting , Moore is the ultimate professional but he has no interest in projecting racing , unlike Frankie though he’ll not create the wrong headlines

HDLG – Depends on your point of view and taste I guess but both are highly skilled at what they do and are/were the go to riders (Moore much more so now) in any country they ride in, they just come at it from the most diametrically opposed positions.

“No, Ian we are already at seven and counting.”

    I stand corrected, sir.

    It’s painful, isn’t it?

All of this will be rehashed when he actually does retire.

Glad he’s retiring and probably at the right time

I’m in my early 30s and not been following racing near as long as most on here and he is the best flat jockey of my life time

He’s not as strong in the finish as he was but I always thought his greatest ability was positioning a horse in the right place and therefore if you fancied a fav and he was the jockey you’d have every confidence it’d be given every chance

He was never one, recently anyway, to be backing e/w in a handicap but in a graded race was mustard

Lester Piggott, in his later years, used to drop his hands if he couldn’t win and finish in a worse position than might otherwise have been the case, often to the detriment of forecast and each-way punters.

So I think I get where you’re coming from, FF, and I like your analysis from your perspective – I’d tend to agree with you.

Better than Fallon FF ? , not for me , Fallon carried horses over the line , finesse against brute force but Fallon was also brilliant at switching horses off

‘Its the loss of him as the larger than life face of horse racing for many of Joe Public that will be most difficult to replace….there really isn’t anyone out there that comes close.’

This. If you were to walk around the street asking people to name any jockey he would be quite possibly the top answer and probably will be for years to come in the same way that Piggott no doubt was (and he’s probably close to the top even now).

I’d say even more than Piggott.

It was the sheer overwhelming volume of Piggott’s success in his heyday than made him a household name – he had all the interview charm and charisma of an otter.

Frankie Dettori isn’t quite as good as Piggott was but he’s infinitely more media friendly than the late great Long Fellow ever was.

    Even I quite like Dettori.
