As part of the shenanigans for Saturday’s Shergar Cup , Frankie Dettori (previously ridden for Rest of the World and Europe in other formats) has now changed sides and become British!
We know that Ascot will want their part time PR man/jockey included but this surely reinforces the contrived nonsense that demeans the memory of one of the top horses of recent years.
Racing is amongst the most individual of sports and ill suited to team competition. This dreary event has never really been accepted and has had problems with team tactics etc.in the past. This year it seems to be support for a pop concert of ageing 80s "stars".
To complete the gimmicks GB has a lady "captain"- what has she won of any note?
The most interesting "team" is Ireland- Spencer, Manning and Hughes should find plenty of interference.
Incidentally does anyone know if Balding presents for the BBC or is she in Beijing or at a rugby league match? Will be even more cringeworthy without her.

It´s like the WWE for the Shergar Cup. What next will Kirsty be a manager and parade down the course in very little? Will we get Julie Krone in a match race with Hayley Turner over 5f on two claimers? Will Dettori take out Baze with a metal chair in the Distaff? Who knows? Any answers? I´m really trying to get excited about this, honest.

No idea Lingfield but CB does know her stuff about all the sports she comments or presents on – unlike some pundits who just talk bollox.

Frankie has always been British according to the BBC, as they regularly have him as a contender for Sports Personality of the Year  .

I once asked for a price on Gianfranco Zola (can’t remember which bookie) only to be told he is Italian and that he only works in this country, and wasn’t eligible for SPotY according to the BBC. Third favourite that year was Frankie Dettori

While I have little time for the Shergar Cup format as a whole, this is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for people to witness the two most prolific riders in horse racing history go head to head on a British racecourse. This is a tremendous PR coup for Ascot and if I was marketing this meeting I would base the whole advertising campaign around the fact that these two legends will be making an appearance.

Sadly though, the truth is that the large majority of racegoers at Ascot on Saturday will not have a clue who Russell Baze and Jorge Ricardo are, and will care even less who they are and what they have previously achieved. With the type of clientele they are specifically trying to attract to this event, they will be little more than two more jockeys to hurl abuse at following a losing bet.

To be fair Frankie is living up to the Italian tradition just like WW2 and changing sides to whichever one is winning.

I know the Shergar Cup is not everyones favourite thing in racing but it does provide a chance of light relief inbetween Goodwood and York and a chance to see world class jockeys in action who would not normally grace our turf.

For the true flat fans this is a chance in a million and it is quite right that a lot of people will be at Ascot for this.

One thing which has struck me and could also be worth having a try with is to have a tournament at somewhere like Lingfield or Newbury,Sandown,Doncaster etc.

But this could be a lady jockeys event named after Ouija Board or another top quality race mare.

A UK and Ireland team could have the following
    Hayley Turner,Kirsty Milczarek,Adele Rothery,Cathy Gannon,Amy Kathleen Parsons,Stacy Renwick,Kim Tinkler

And a Rest of the World team with Julie Krone,Mary Doser and many other lady riders (Ok i only know 2)

Im sure this could be worth having a go with and plus i think MDeering could help me with this one is that Australia do have a female caller who could call a few races aswell.

Probably a bad idea in some peoples eyes but with the girls on track it might be worth having a try.

According to the Radio Times it is Richard Pitman fronting the coverage – that well known flat racing expert.

I quite agree. At the very least, then, it should behove the racecourse executive to include a decent write-up on each gentleman’s achievements in the racecard, or, better still, put both of them on the front ot it as well.

"the truth is that the large majority of racegoers at Ascot on Saturday will not have a clue who Russell Baze and Jorge Ricardo are" from Happy Jack. The truth is that the vast majority of American racegoers don’t have a clue who they are either.
