Sensational, quite Tudor Minstrel-like.
Hard to say whether he was running out of stamina or just getting lonely out in front.
We shall no doubt find out in 5 weeks time.
April 30, 2011 at 20:58 #352967I watched the race at Uttoxeter and it is the first time I have seen a jumps crowd applauding a flat winner, watching on the big screen.
It was an awesome performance – as one wizened hack put it "it was a privilege to witness that run"
April 30, 2011 at 21:06 #352970What do i think? I think it was bizarre, exciting, jaw dropping, terrific, pure box-office. He doesn’t look a 12f horse, but i for one have never seen anything quite like that so i would rule nothing out, and i have now have a new punting rule – do not back against Frankel until he is beaten.
If he ends up lining up in The Derby, any layers should be sweating – no way will Mr. Cecil target him for the race if he feels it isn’t within his compass. I personally hope he stays over a mile, only for the reason it means we’ll probably see him more often.
Frankel is now a ‘Sport’ story i suspect rather than a racing one.
April 30, 2011 at 21:39 #352979It is very hard to compare what was a unique performance with previous runnings but I would be very reluctant to rate him close to the likes of Brigadier Gerard or El Gran Senor.
The early pace took so many horses out of their expected comfort zone but at the line he didn’t look to have anything more in hand and the second and third don’t appear exceptional. They have probably run their races whereas many of the remainder have failed to perform.
April 30, 2011 at 21:47 #352986Great performance but surely only millionaires would want to back him.
Then Gosden’s horse, which hasn’t been on a track for god knows how long wins at a huge price and you think: my god, racing for change has got its work cut out selling this game to the public. Sublime to the ridiculous.
My mate backed him. Apparently Gosden said he thinks he’s better than another stayer of his, the name escapes me.
April 30, 2011 at 21:51 #352987That’s not a horse, that’s a gift sent from heaven.
Just makes me want to live forever seeing horses like that.
I was out of it for about an hour. Was basically demanding blood tests to make sure he’s a horse. My jaw was gone after 4 furlongs and stayed like that. Everyone was looking around at each other in the Members’ Stand to sort of ask ‘he can’t…can he?’ Willie Carson was a few feet from me and he was shaking his head afterwards. A performance that is simply unrivalled by anything we’ve seen recently. Dubai Millennium, Slip Anchor, Reference Point, Shergar and Secretariat are the only other performances that come to mind. I love and adore Zarkava and will do forever, but she never produced an ‘I was there’ moment. That was today, and then some. An absolute privilege.
April 30, 2011 at 21:55 #352990It was the most incredible performance I’ve ever seen in a British classic. I thought Zafonic was immense back in 1993, but that was something else.
It was visually impressive Bos yes but to clock 1m 37 tells you Zafonic would have beaten him by 2 lengths and it is blatantly obvious from today that the horse cant be restrained and has to be left to his own devices and thats just go like the clappers, todays performance proved without any doubt that this fellow wont get a 11/2m in a bus running like that.Dubawi Gold will be beaten by others by 6 lengths this season and Native Khan would beat Frankel over 11/4m so lets not get carried away.
April 30, 2011 at 21:56 #352991I thought, ‘oh, he’s going a bit quick there’
Then I thought, ‘he’s probably slow down a bit in a moment’
And then I thought, ‘surely he can’t keep this up’
Then it became clear it was all over & I was doing a one man ovation in my sitting room.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think today told us anything about Frankel’s potential as a Derby horse. He looks to me like the sort of horse that might give you something different every time.
What a performance! He could’ve given the rest of the field a start. Awesome stuff.

It tells you nothing of the sort. As Phil Bull once said “a timefigure will tell you how bad a horse isn’t, but not necessarily how good a horse is.”
April 30, 2011 at 22:14 #352999Only just seen it – an absolutely jaw-dropping performance, one of the best I’ve ever seen.
April 30, 2011 at 22:17 #353001Truly astonishing, we may be witnessing the best horse ever!
April 30, 2011 at 22:18 #353003Tuffers the clock never lies,Frankel could run that race another 10 times and still not clock 1m 35secs like Zafonic. Todays ground was officially Good/firm but arguably over watered and was riding on the good side which was exactly what the French colt encountered back in 93,both colts powered down the centre of the track but the difference was Frankel won his race at the start and would have had a 10 length lead over Zafonic at halfway but the french colt had a lightening turn of foot and would have swept past Frankel inside the last furlong leaving him one paced.Frankel couldn’t have gone any faster at any point of todays race and certainly wouldn’t have found anything had there been anything good enough to challenge him.

Kingfisher, I think they’re missing you on the Betfair forum.
April 30, 2011 at 22:37 #353008Tuffers,its common knowledge that when the Rowley Mile is officially good/firm a Group 1 horse will clock 1m 35secs,Frankel ran his heart out to clock 1m 37.30secs,all those getting carried away by how visually impressive he looked should realise that his brilliance was helped by the lack of brilliance from his competitors, his jockey rode an enterprising race and won it with just that.Had Frankel clocked 1m 34secs and at several points during the race he had me wondering if that is what he was going to do,then i would be hailing him as Pegasus.Ultimately the clock proved it was more impressive to the eye than it actually was in reality and that some of the beaten horses seriously under achieved.Time will tell.

How many seconds per furlong would you allow for the headwind?
April 30, 2011 at 22:46 #353012wow! just seen it….. i like the comparisons with zafonic. was there that day at HQ when eddery emerged out of the gloom with all others off the bridle. the horses he beat that day were top class– barathea e.g. Zafonic did not surpass the guineas win (sadly) but khalid is a good listener normally and i hope they go st james palace/ july cup/ breeders cup route. as to a match between the 2. well as it stands now frankel’s beaten nothing as a 3yo and zafonic beat his lot. in a virtual race i’d put Eddery tickling Queally’s balls at the 2 furlong pole.

The Vermeille perhaps?
