Just watched Frankels performance tonight and I was mightily impressed.
Whilst far too early to be making rash predictions, I would be very surprised if the horse didn’t go on to much better things.
I am really pleased that the maestro Mr Cecil seems to have yet another quality animal in his yard. Knowing Mr Cecil the horse will receive the perfect handling and will be given every chance to fulfil its potential.
I just wondered what everyone else thought about the performanceAugust 13, 2010 at 20:39 #312652Haven’t seen the race yet, but I doubt it was as impressive as Saamidd was this afternoon.
The only difference is that – like you say – Cecil will get the very best out of Frankel and it will fulfill its potential. Saamidd on the otherhand will be hyped up by Godolphin, only to probably end up running in handicaps
August 13, 2010 at 20:57 #312659For a moment I wondered if there would be any negative reaction to some driving, but the response was good. Really looked the part.
August 13, 2010 at 22:34 #312672Really impressive I thought given that the conditions couldn’t really have suited. The winner and the second Nathaniel look potentially very smart. The time was faster than the handicap as well. Both Frankel and Nathaniel have stamina laden pedigrees and should keep improving. Nathaniel looked like he really knew his job, Frankel pulled a bit but Henry said he’d never really galloped the horse he was just ready to run so he should improve a lot just for the first run alone.
August 14, 2010 at 06:39 #3126853 F out Queally was quite happy to sit well back. I think he they must have had total confidence in him yesterday. The second must be at least 1 90+ horse and Frankel toyed with him.

Absolute monster, star in the making.
I am already looking forward to 2011 Derby now.

To get this excited you really have to know rather than guess that the horses he beat were also pretty useful. There was a Godolphin horse who bolted up at Newbury – is Frankel better than him? We don’t know. At the moment he is no more than another promising juvenile. In the short term with all the hype he is most unlikely to offer any value to punters.
August 14, 2010 at 19:49 #312787Only time will how good he is. I hope for Henry that he continues in the right direction. My own view is that both the first two will turn out to be useful. I also think that it was a lovely introduction ride from Queally.
August 15, 2010 at 19:54 #312952I have this left-field theory that you can sometimes work out how good a horse may be….by the way the owners name them.
The late Bobby Frankel trained loads of stakes winners for Juddmonte Farms in the US (like Empire Maker, Heat Haze, Intercontinental etc), & also had success with a few that H.Cecil originally trained (like Chester House & Beat Hollow).
You have to guess they have named Frankel in memory of him, & with such warm memories, surely they wouldn’t name an ordinary horse after him.
September 10, 2010 at 18:09 #316950Obviously, I was more than a little sceptical after one run but even though today he only beat two inferior opponents it was very hard not be impressed.
I know he was widely quoted for the Derby after the debut but I would rather risk a few quid for the Guineas. I would certainly prefer him to the exposed horses who head the market.
If he were mine I would probably put him away for the season as he doesn’t shape as if he particularly needs any more experience.
September 10, 2010 at 18:17 #316951Using Phil Smith’s yardstick handicapping, and his suggested pounds per length, I have Frankel rated 126 on the BHA scale for winning this 3-runner minor event, "levelling the race through" the 90-rated third.
That is 2 higher than any 2-y-o achieved in the whole of 2009.
Or am I doing something wrong?

You didn’t adjust the rating for the horse being inferior according to wfa like all those 3yo’s who can’t run in the Ebor for the obvious.
And you haven’t attended one of Phil’s "United Nations" International classification sessions to get the rating ratified.
Apart from that – perfect.

I’m not a handicapper Pru, but looking at Phil’s answers, of the winning margin is 17 lengths at 2lbs per length, wouldn’t that equal 124, not 126?
September 10, 2010 at 18:52 #316955Frankel was carrying 2 lb more than Diamond Geezah.
September 10, 2010 at 18:59 #316956Group 1 Horse no doubt.
However i will have to wait and see how he runs in the Racing Post.
I hear they muted the Royal Lodge but thats a shite race for Proper Horses.
Racing Post for me

I knew I should’ve kept my mouth shut…
September 10, 2010 at 19:21 #316960128 or 126 for every ton heroically arbed? It’s all a question of semantics.
It’s 28 profit (135-107) but 26% profit on investment (135 divided by the 107 laid out).
I think Paul has the right figure at 126.
